What a beautiful rifle. One day I hope to own one. 

What am I seeing on the side of receiver amidst the engraving that looks like a smooth blank area?

There's a buck running, and the empty area is simply open sky above him. Pretty typical Ballard engraving. Occasionally the engraver might toss in a couple tiny birds flying in the open sky, but they're so small and light they could be worn off easily, if they were once there.

Beautiful rifle James! I always wondered what those two Rigby barrel side ribs looked like with the forend off? Do they continue under the forend so they're identical to the top rib or are they stopped at the wood line?

They stop at the edge of the wood, so basically half a Rigby flat on the sides. And the bottom side of Rigby barrels usually have a sort of lug that hangs down at the 6 o'clock position, against the receiver. Always figured it was there to fit some barrel wrench they used in assembling the Rigby barrels to the receiver.

My 1st model Rigby doesn't have the critters in a circle either. Buck and doe one side, and running buffalo on the other side.

My much later Marlin Firearms Co. 18xxx range Rigby has the typical circle. It's also one of the forged frames with 3 line address.
