Research topic - W.M. Farrow

Hello All,

I'm doing some research on Milton Farrow and his shooting accomplishments. I have his book and have read it, but I'm curious if there is another good source (a thread on this site or others) that has more information. I know he was born in Belfast Maine, but I don't know the date, or the date of his death.

The reason I'm researching this is because I'm in the process of donating a trophy to our local club that hosts mid-range fullbore matches. We seem to have more F-class shooters than sling shooters, and I'm trying to revive prone shooting at our local club and what better way that to offer a nice trophy.

BTW, Milton was born in Maine and our club is located in Scarborough, so that's the tie in. I'm also curious if there are any of his descendants here in Maine, although I know he moved to Rhode Island and founded the Newport Rifle Club.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

B

I don't believe Farrow was involved in that type of competitive shooting but I could also be wrong. Not quite sure how this would actually honor his own competitive accomplishments that were more geared to 200 yard Offhand Schuetzen matches back in his day. Not really trying to disagree with your intentions but I was thinking maybe you could honor one of the best to date in that very specific sport.

Have you read his book? He won the 1880 Wimbledon Cup along with many many more long range prone matches.

I am working on a "second version" of the Farrow book which will show several more rifles as well as other interesting Farrow material. It will be a while though as I am working hard on trying to finish up the Stevens Pope books. Hope to have them done by the end of the year.

One thing you may want to do is research Farrow outside of his own book...

Not much more I can add that the other members above haven't already mentioned. If you search this forum, a few more bits of information should pop up including quite a few posts by "Waterman" with a timeline of where Farrows were being produced at different points of time.

Thanks for all the responses. Gives me some some avenues to pursue more information.

For those that have not read "How I became a Crack Shot" it's a very entertaining read. Any one familiar with range/match drama about who is the best shot will get a good chuckle out of this.

If you can find a copy of the 1962 Gun Digest there is a good article on Farrow and his rifles.
A couple of Grant's single shot books have info also.

Prone with a Creedmoor type rifle is where he started.  Can you imagine a not very big guy starting that way?  They must have made them tough back then.

But don't take Farrow's book as the gospel.  And an awful lot that was written about him in widely circulated books is also inaccurate.  Fact checking is easier now.

Well I got a sense from his book that he had a pretty big ego. I'm looking forward to learning more about him.
