Curious as to whether target cameras are allowed by ASSRA. My old eyes having a serious problem seeing bullet holes......

I believe so Dave Purcell was selling them at one of our ISSA Regional matches before he passed. He set up a  camera at 200 yards for us to watch. The video was sent to his laptop and it was wireless. So it was pretty much like putting out another wind flag but it was also a bit expensive for one to buy. It came with the stand, carrying case and everything needed included except a laptop or phone and it was a real nice package to take out to the range.

Target cameras can be made at home , we did it here at our range . The set up we used will give a clear image out to 1100 yards. The whole setup is less than $300.00 CDN, plus your laptop The only limitations we have found is battery life on the laptop and sun light on the computer screen
This is the slickest system for sighting in rifles from 200yds and beyond , No more running back and forth or attempting to focus spotting scopes
I realize this does not answer your original question , but the system does have a lot going for it

Do you have a list of what you used for components?

When I asked if I could use one at Cody the Schuetzenmeister told me that I could but he would shoot it. So I didn't.

Butch uses one at Butte.  It resides in a armored shell. Seems to work perty darn good. Specially for spotting on the honor targets.

The Schützenmeister should weigh in here but I see no reason that why a camera system setup for spotting would produce an unfair advantage.

it could be an advantage if conditions were such the shooters were having trouble spotting their shots   mirage  etc  art

I don't see an unfair advantage its really no different than having a very high quality spotting scope. Would not the mirage picked up by the Camera be the same or am I missing something. Even if the camera was setup at the target itself it would not be reading the mirage from the shooting line to the target.

JLouis is right regard in regards to the quality of spotting scopes.  The Swarovski will spot more bullet holes than the Walmart Special.  The camera should spot them all. As for the mirage, I think the camera would provide the advantage of showing the shots on the target when they would not be visible through a scope.

With the going prices cheaper than a top-quality spotting scope; price  isn't a valid argument for sure.  And it won't make your shots more accurate...

I can’t see how using these devices would be an inherent advantage in competition anymore that better a more powerful scope and optics. Not knowing the rules very well I guess it’s possible that using an electronic recording device such as this might cross a line dealing with historic intent of the sport but again Im just spitballing.

Right now I’d be reluctant to rely 100% on any electronic camera and display requiring wireless controls, batteries,  and display of questionable reliability at a rifle range.  Ground optical glass on a tripod could care less about your batteries, your Bluetooth or interference from other gear or weather conditions not to mention folks who would rather hack than shoot.

I don't see a problem with using them, except we have section 3.10 in the rules: "No chronographs or other electronic sampling equipment may be downrange during any ASSRA competition."

I knew this was coming from our schuetzenmeister, this rule has been in the rule book for many years, I agree this device would let us see the target better, but if one shooter had one of these fancy-dancy cameras the rest would feel they had to have one. It would be nice to see where your hitting in those early morning relays.  Ledball

What if your opponent decided to take-out your high dollar camera with a well placed shot.  Ledball
