Bill,
This is from the JBM website, I have found this data isn't absolute gospel - things never are what they seem especially in real world applications - there is always a variable.  If you go to the site listed below, add your values, in fact I have add fictitious values, taken the temp to near zero F, reduced the velocity to 1/4 of the muzzle velocity and still had a stable bullet.  I've reduced the length and pushed the velocity up and went to severe over-spin and at 400 yards still shot excellent holes through tight framed paper samples. Figure that out...
Greg

Stability:
Calculates the Miller stability factor. This formula was derived by Don Miller and published in Precision Shooting. This formula is much better than the antiquated Greenhill's formula. Stability value should be in the range of 1.3 to 2.0 to ensure bullet stability. Don Miller and Dave Brennan (editor of Precision Shooting) have also been kind enough to let me host his stability paper on my exterior ballistics bibliograpy page. The paper is titled A New Rule for Estimating Rifling Twist An Aid to Choosing Bullets and Rifles.

It is surprising at how different conditions can challenge
those Miller stability numbers.
Example, a Lyman "Snover" 410663, at 1.375" long in a 16 twist barrel can shoot pretty well out to 800yds and kind of OK at 900, 1000. But if you have twitchy winds especially from 10:00 to 2:00, It will be "spray and pray" at the longer distances. Go down to a 1.325" long bullet, particularly a smooth paper patch bullet that has a 25% diameter "hemi" meplat and it will shoot to 1000yds accurately, and with less issue with the headwinds. Proven at Lodi long range matches.

But going for a faster twist won't affect accuracy with lighter bullets, while giving more versatility in the use of heavier bullets.  I'm more of a 'in case of doubt, go for the faster twist' kinda guy.

I'll have to disagree with the faster twist and lighter bullets.  I have a 16 twist rolling block in 40-70 and a 330 grain bullet looks like a shotgun pattern at 50 yards with it.  I had to go to a 400 grain bullet to get a decent group.   Interistingly, the chronograph data with that 330 grain bullet looked extremly good.   I had planned that Remington as a hunting rifle using the 330 grain bullet but letthe re-borer talk me into the fast twist.   Mighty disappointing as I have a nice 45-70 Sharps if I want to shoot a 400 grain slug.

Usually, there's another factor coming in if accuracy isn't there, but not so much they twist rate.

My 16 twist Browning in 40-65 shoots a 285 grain bullet for 200 meter matches and my 22 twist 50-70 shoots 360 to 625 grain bullets just fine.

I have to agree with oneatatime, I have a NEI mold that drops a 305gr. 40 cal pumpkin (it's hard to distinguish the top or the bottom because of the meplat size Wink) and it shoots well out of any of the twists I have.  Someone once said it looked like a well balanced bullet. Grin  Both of these shoot respectable but they are ugly in design and take a longer throat as it's not really a bore riding nose.

I have to agree GT shorter in length / lighter weight bullets. In faster twist have shot just fine. With that being said if someone is experiencing bad results. It is probably the bullet and its design and not that of the faster twist rate.

Here is a couple of PICS of  40-65/16 twist bullets performance
at 100 and at 800yds.  The 100yds is my 1.325"/371 gr DDEPP
bullet now made by BACO, #403380E
The earlier 2011
scorebook plot of a string I shot is with my 1.325" 370 grain Elliptical minigroove bullet.
The 1.375" Lyman Snover would shoot very well for me out to 600yds, but never at the long range yard lines

Good shooting, Arnie! Don't you just hate it when everything is going so well for the first 9 shots and then Murphy comes along;-)

BillOregon,
I am happy with my bullet for my custom rebuilt orig. HI Wall-40-65 16 twist out to 1K.
Load of 74.5 gr Swiss 1.5 clocks 1402fps from 30 inch barrel.
A friend uses a box stock Brg BPCR 40-65 with this bullet. Also very good out to 1K. He placed 4th overall at the May Lodi long range match. Me- I have been hurting with some health problems lately, and so did not place well.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

I have a large number of .40 caliber rifles, as I really like .40's. I also have quite a variety of twist rates, and powder capacities. I've tried bullet weights from as light as a 330 gr. to a 420 grain in all of them.
As mentioned previously, the Snover, or other bullets I've tried with more tapered noses don't do as well at longer than 650 yds. if there's much crosswind. But bullets that are shorter, and have more weight forward seem to shoot better at distance when the crosswinds pick up a bit. They still get pushed off target, but once I adjust windage back in to compensate, the group sizes seem to hold better.
My .40 caliber barrels range from a 1:14" twist, to a slower twist original barrel that's a 1:20" twist. I've shot the Ballard 1:20" twist with everything from the light 330 gr. to my heavy 420 gr. bullets, and it shoots all of them very well with it's 20" twist, at 650-1000 yds. Surprisingly the point of impact changes very little from my 350 gr. load to the 420 gr. load. Likely because the 420 gr. is seated deeper in the case, thus increasing pressure slightly.

Vall, which mold are you using to cast the 420-grain bullet? What alloy of lead do you favor?
