Looking for some help - Fecker Small Game Scope
Jul 28th, 2021 at 10:56am
Print Post
I recently acquired this Fecker Small Game scope and have been experiencing some difficulty finding information on it.  It is different than most Feckers I've seen and a buddy of mine who is far more knowlegable on these things than I figures it dates to the 1920s.  Has anyone had any experience with these scopes and what can you tell me about them?  Thanks much

This is the only writing on the scope.

It does indeed appear to be an early Fecker Small Game scope. But I don't think those mounts on either end are Fecker mounts. Nor are the two mounts a paired set either.

I first thought the mounts were mismatched too but on getting the scope I saw that the rear tightening screw had to be smaller in diameter to provide clearence for the windage knob.  If there is a mismatch then it would have to be the larger diameter front screw that would not be original to the scope.  What make do you think the rings are?

PS - to me, both mounts appear to be compatible with each other and consistent with the function of the scope.  And the elevation and windage adjusters do not have micrometer clicks.  Here's another perspective on the mounts and rings:

The mounts could be from a number of 3/4" tube scopes as that was standard during the 1920's and 30's. But they don't look like the quality of anything I've seen on a JW Fecker scope. I would expect Fecker to use the same tension screw front and rear also. Just for cost concerns if he needed a small thumb knob at the rear, then he'd use the same size up front. I suppose maybe the front screw could be a replacement, and if it is would explain the larger thumb knob. Still not certain these are Fecker mounts at all. I have a number of Fecker scopes, including a very early one, and the mounts on mine are extremely high quality as all his were.
Of course I'm not an expert, and could be mistaken.

Thanks.  Another question.  Would this scope have had a recoil spring?  There is no Pope rib on the top so my hunch is no.

I should also add the the mounts are nicely finished blued steel and not pot metal or something like you would find on a Lyman 438.  As I said before, there is no micrometer click and the elevation and windage adjusters require the loosening of a screw for movement and the tightening of the screw for locking it all into place after the zero is set.

Stroebel's scope book says Fecker scopes were available 1925-1961.  I don't remember EVER having seen  scope mounts like those, tho. Maybe really good home-made ones?

They don't look like home made mounts to me.  They look like something made by a factory.  Perhaps not for Fecker, but certainly for something else.  And the mounts are well made and solid so if they are not original to the scope who ever put them on selected a very functional option.  Even if they are not original to the scope I am not disappointed with the package at all.  It makes up into a very handy and useful rig.

Those mounts, and the scope would not have used a recoil spring. Without a rib it couldn't return to vertical each time. It has the little V notch to orient it, but likely that wont work with a recoil spring.
When Fecker started out he bought mounts from Stevens, so some early Fecker scopes have late model Stevens mounts. I've seen some with Lyman mounts also, but not sure if Fecker still was buying mounts after Lyman bought Stevens, or the mounts just ended up on some Fecker scopes? Unertl left Fecker to start his company and bought Fecker mounts in 1936 and later for his scopes. He also bought Lyman mounts for his early scopes, and I have a first year Unertl with Lyman mounts.
This is my Ballard with Stevens-Pope barrel, and an early Fecker scope that appears to have Lyman mounts on it.

And my Ballard with 1st year Unertl that has Lyman mounts on it.

Thanks, I appreciate the education.  Very nice scope and rifle packages you have there and that early Unertl certainly is unique.  Someday I hope to aspire to having a Ballard.  They are quite the eyefull!

The very early Fecker scopes that I have or at one time owned used Winchester mounts when Fecker was located in Cleveland Ohio. The one I have now is serial 837, and is so marked and mounted. This is not to say that he may have sourced them from whoever he could, that satisfied his requirements and at a competitive price.

The early Unertl pictured above on my Schoyen Cody Ballard has the same alignment system as your Fecker. A "V" notch in the front mount, with a pointer that goes into the notch to align it. Since mine's on a .22LR the 14 lb. gun never moves enough to ever reset it.

I think you're right on Fecker having possibly purchased mounts from more than one source. And as you say, it might be more about competitive cost, and quality.

Were Fecker scopes serial numbered sequentially throughout all of the types they made or were the numbers specific to individual types?  In other words, would the serial number start at one and then proceed in sequence regardless of what scope was made or were blocks assigned to different types of scopes such as the small game and “full size” series?
