First time out with 50-70

Just got my #5 Rolling Block back from JES reboring so loaded up a few to see how it shot before sending it off to Curt Hardcastle for him to fit the extractor and fine tune the action if needed.  Since I don't have a mould I bought 50 cast bullets sized .512 515141 and 50 more of the heavier 515142.  Just guessing for a load I used 25 grains of 5744 in each.  I was surprised of the light recoil.  The 515141 shot fair but the rifle really liked the 515142.  Shooting was done at 50 yards and no cleaning between shots.  First two pictures are of 515142 with the first 5 shots and the second 4 shots as I get one to set the seating die to.  The last group was with the 515141 bullet.  I am happy as a clam at high tide.  Tom  Grin

Isn't that a good feeling first time out and you see that group and you say to yourself, "yeah, it is worth the cost"
Nice grouping.
Should do well at 100.
Wouldn't want to stop a chunk of lead that big & heavy.

Looks good Tom. My JES Rebored
Sharps does not like the 515141 , but an Accurate  mold at .512 and 470 grains shoots well out to 300 with 1F Bp. Keep up the good work.

All my 50-70s, except for an early Shiloh infantry rifle, are original.  They all, including the Shiloh have slow twists and do great with the standard 50-70 government bullet (515141).   But,  I don't consider any of  my 50-70 rifles target rifles.  Makes it a lot easier to be happy with them.

Those are some very fine groups.
You make me realize that I have simply got to get my .50-70 roller finished. John Taylor installed the Green Mountain 1:24 twist barrel on a re-arsenaled 67/89 Swede action and chambered it to .50-70 for me years ago. Wood is from Treebone, fitted by friend Tim Rossbach. I still need to have the barrel blued and front sight installed. No excuses! I bought the Buffalo Arms .510 600-grain Creedmoor mold for it.

I was just out at the range this morning with my 50-70 Comblain and experimenting with the Ideal 509134 (360 grain) bullet with Unique and 5744. My eyes were wacko with the heat and I was seeing 2 apertures out on the front end of the barrel instead of one - take your choice. I was shooting at 100 on one of the low contrast red bulls from the Wyoming Schuetzen Union (I don't recommend them!) and some of the loads were looking pretty good but I would pick the wrong aperture of the two and that screwed things up. I know, for my old eyes, put the scope on for working up loads!

That orange bull is definitely hard to see for me as well and at 100 yards it is impossible for me to use with open sights.  I shoot mostly at 50 yards with iron sights and always use a black bull.  Our range has 50 yard smallbore targets with 5 bulls so if I can decide what bull I am looking at I stand a fighting chance with a round aperture front sight and the Hadley disc rear.  It just amazes me the scores from some of the matches at 200 yards where the scope class and iron sight scores are almost the same for a few of the shooters.  They must eat 10,000 carrots a year!  Tom

I sighted in at 50 with this load of 13 grains of Unique and I may revisit this vicinity of Unique. I got a reasonable sight picture at 50 and I had little hope that the little 360 grain pumpkin ball would do well but even with this load it would be usable for plinking at 50.
