357 Mag case conversations

Got a Martini Action coming and was going to build a .218 Bee on it.  Got to thinking about making a Switch Barrel.  I have a .38 Barrel Blank so I can do a 357 Mag for Deer.  Would like to do a .22 cal based on the 357 case.  Any suggestions?  This would be for a Walking Varmint with shots under 200 yards.  Woods are thick where I'm at.
Winter is coming.....  David

22 sounds interesting especially on how to go about sizing down the cases.

You could start with a 22 Rem Jet. and if that isn't enough case capacity neck down a 256 Win mag.

There are a few 22 wildcats based on the 38 spl or 357 case. all the way up to a 222 rimmed that can be formed from 357 max.

Just depends on how much horsepower you want

Don't ignore the 5.6x50R. Basically the same head diameter as .357 so the same extractor should work for both. At full snort it's about like a .223, and can be loaded down to .22 RF level and everywhere in between - pretty versatile IMO.

25 cal, 256 Winchester magnum. Has anyone got a reamer setup for a breech seat version of this? Also A question on 5.6x50R that was suggested. Is brass available anywhere?

Brass is out there. RWS is a major player. Not dirt cheap, but it's not like you'll be feeding an AR-15.

There is always the 30 Wesson.  With the proper twist you have a heavy 180 grain deer killer.

Good choice - I have a cadet in 30 Wesson. 1-10 twist.

Used to have a 17 Saunders Jet. Take 22 jet cases ,neck down to 21-20 then to 17 and fire form. Great for Ruger # 1 and 3. Had it on a TC contender, both rifle barrel and short 15" with BR forearm. The caes were bombproof  as we all know about the 357 and max case. Dick also tried the 357 Max but the small 357 Mag case was perfect powder capacity.....

My third post after lurking forever!

Think about trying a .25 Classic, which is basically a .30 Herrett necked down to quarter bore.

A bit more capacity than .25-20 or .256, but still markedly less than a .25-35, which should give you a short cartridge that fits your action (assuming it is a Cadet) and has plenty of oomph for 200 yard shooting.

Frankly I have no idea how difficult it would be to form cases though, something which has always been a bit of an issue with .256

if we are talking .25 you could look at using the 5.6 x 50R to make a rimmed version of the 25 Copperhead (.222 necked to 25) similarly you could do a .222 Rimmed using the same case or Bertram cases.

I'd suggest either .222 Rimmed or 5.6 X 50R Mag.

Joe Do just listed 100 each 17 Ackley Bee cases in the for sale section and something else that might also work. That is if the rim size is also what you are looking for to fit the same extractor that you plan on using for your switch barrel project.

Love the Martini small frame - have 3 sporterized rifles and 10 barrels.  Regarding the .357 groove barrel, I would suggest chambering at 357 Maximum.  Contrary to some opinions, the round chambers just fine in a small frame Martini. You can still shoot 38 Spcl and 357 Mag, but also load up to higher power/heavier bullets - much more versatile.  On the 22 cal option I agree with others regarding the 222 rimmed and 5.6x50R, which use the 357 extractor and both perform very well.  Be sure you anneal, because they are expensive/rare.  I personally would suggest the 219 Zipper, and then you can add barrels for 25-35, 32-40, 30-30 and 35-30 all with with the same extractor.
