Clear Apertures for a Lyman 17a
Jul 9th, 2021 at 8:38pm
Print Post
Does anyone know of a source for clear apertures to fit a Lyman 17a front sight.  I purchased a few from Champion Shooters Supply before they closed and am not having any luck finding a new source. I’m looking for a .150, .145, and .140 aperture sizes.  Thanks, Tom

I believe Lee Shaver lists them.

None of those are "clear".

Clear, or just transparent like the yellow ones?

The only clear inserts I have seen are Anschutz.

I have never seen a set of diameter hole clear inserts available for the smaller Lyman 17 A.

A deceased Schuetzen shooter use to machine clear inserts for us and dye them pink or yellow (obtained dyes from eye glass maker).
A machinist friend could make you a custom set.

He would put a different size beveled hole in an assortment of them to allow for the correct amount of light.
We would blacken the beveled edge with a black felt pen which allowed us to center the target easier.

I have probably 4 or 5 tins marked Lyman for the 17a and they all have at least the yellow clear lenses in them. Have to check to see if there are any truly clear lenses?

Yes the original Lyman sets had a single yellow see through insert that was difficult to see through.

But I have never seen a set of clear inserts for the smaller diameter 17 A with all the different aperture sizes available like the ones they made for Anschutz sights.

Here is what an Anschutz set looks like.

The clear ones I saw probably not lymans then, could have been Anschutz.

Not at all hard to make.   I just cut out chunks of clear plastic, drill the centers for an appropriate screw and make a stack of them, tighten the nut and turn them all to the appropriate diameter.
Then use a center drill to enlarge the aperturesto the desired sizes  I haven't found it necessary to darken the edge of the hole, tho it would be easy to do.

Thanks for your comments.  I literally just received an e-mail from, I believe the owner of Freeland Sports who informed me that they now carry clear and tinted apertures that fit the Lyman 17a. Aperture sizes range from.060 to.150. I think it comes down to personal preference, but I like the clear aperture better than the metal with cross hairs.  It’s the old adage, “If you think it works better, it does.”  Thank again, Tom

I like the lollipop apertures with a single post from 6 o'clock position. I prefer them to be the thin lollipops and not the heavy style. Hole size depends on the target, and distance I shoot at.
