Made a few modifications to my wind socks that some of you showed a past interest in. Changed the socks from white to black and allot easier to see. I also attached them to the back of my vanes to keep them from wrapping around my flag stands. Hard to see but they are very balanced with a weight out front of the vans. They also have ball joints and bubble levels installed for leveling out at the range. To date these new changes have worked out extremely well for myself and will probably be my last. All 4 are very easily stored in a pistol hard case. The Sox's are easily removed and reinstalled and they stored under the foam liner for protection. All the vanes are then placed on top of the foam and the case closed keeping everything in its proper place.

My wind sock set up.
Light nylon silk sock for medium to heavy winds.
Seismic ribbon on bottom to indicate changes in very light wind plus cassette tape ribbon which indicates changes in trickle wind conditions.
Florescent orange really shows on the range - unfortunately this one is many years old and has faded from the sunlight.
It is a lucky one that never got shot by Bruce.

I have a simple windsock mid range, and a traditional vane, daisy wheel with tails fore and aft. The sock catches more major wind shift and direction, the others minor. But, as Bob Dylan once penned, You don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows, but it sure helps, and I am sure he was not looking at it from a target rifleman's viewpoint!!!

I use a combination of a wind vane with a streamer and a dollar store daisy wheel and my copy of Dave's windsock

Daves windsock design worked well at Stars and Stripes. Kinda looks like a pink pantyhose in pic...Dave?

Cloth or even Nylon wind socks are to heavy to pickup a light wind. My trash can liner socks are 34 inches in length and only weigh 113.8 grains each. The thickness is 1 Mil or 1 thousandths of an inch thick. Also needs to be mounted on a pivot, be able to turn freely, be balanced and level to get a correct reading from just a wisp of wind.
Here is a better picture showing the means of balance, bubble level, ball joint leveling head and pivot. Opposite side of Vane is Florescent Green.

Pete & Jack:
Never wear them out in public
- become windsocks when you pick up a run - particularly when you do not shave your legs.
You guys going to post the scores from Tommy's Shoot?

If looking to buy flag stands these are basically the same as mine. They have served me extremely well for several years now for my own personal use. And the price for two each is a pretty good deal when also including free delivery on Thursday July 15th. If over a $25.00 purchase

I pick up tripods at garage sales.
Real cheap when part of the mounting bracket is broken - or people are dumping them since they now use their phone's camera.
You need a real cheap source of tripods since California Bruce is able to hit the closer tripods instead of the targets.

Dave,
Sue said she would get the scores out in a couple of days. I know Joe cleaned everyone's clock in the ISSA .22 matches. Pete did well too I heard.
I had a hard time concentrating between the heat and my ilness. I finally saw the doctor yesterday and was diagnosed with bronchitis and an ear infection. It is nice to have an excuse for doing poorly

Sorry to hear you were coughing it up Jack.
At least with the bad ear you did not have to hear complaints or political views.
Of course Joe would be shooting Federal Bulk rimfire ammo.
Usually Bruce & Annette do great on rimfire shooting Eley Black Box.

Bruce was running the line and didn't shoot on Tuesday. I am not sure if anyone else showed up later in the week, but counting Bruce there were 12 shooters and 3 of us went home after the first day. Joe left after the regional so that would leave only 8 shooters for the Can-Am benchrest match.

Annette Kirby has always been a very good rimfire match competitor. I heard she shot at least one 250 but I am also not sure in which match. Hopefully someone here can post all of the scores for both of the ISSA Regionals and the Stars and Stripe match.
