The seller said he had a set of Ackley dies he would sell me.  I was just allured by the availabilty of factory ammo and brass for the Hornady vs having to roll your own with the Ackley.  But then there was a day way back when when rolloing my own was the preferred choice.  But that's a story for another day.

As long as you now know what will change by setting the barrel back and re-chambering it and my only intent. It won't now end up becoming unexpected events. So why not do what it is that you really want if that is still what you would still actually like to have so just go for it.

For the cost of the smithing to rechamber and misc. services, did you compare it to having CPA fit a 17 Hornady barrel? If I were getting the rifle, I'd inquire about a package deal including all the associated reloading gear, and price the offer accordingly.

edited to 17 Hornady as was originally intended

After purchasing the rifle off Guns International from a gentleman up in Washington state late in May I finally took possession of it on Saturday.  Geez, talk about your instant gratification!  He has dies he'll sell me after he loads a few more rounds to keep another rifle fed.  After reading all the good input on this thread I decided I'm sticking with the Ackley version of the Hornet.

I see the decision is already made. I concur that it is a good one. I could not be more pleased with my Cooper in .17 AH. A sweet little cartridge.

Wise choice you can always change it later. And what you have might actually be more accurate and the better long term better choice. Now you will find out just how well it might actually shoot once you get a load developed for it.

I have a little Martini in 17 Ackley Hornet which I bought very cheap because the original owner could not afford the expensive Group 4 dies at $275.

I also thought of rechambering to the Hornady version and in anticipation bought a set of dies for $40. If you back off the FLS die by just 1/3 of a turn, these Hornady dies will reload the AH cases without crushing the 40deg shoulder of the AH.

Hold still varmint, whilst I plugs ya!
