My Stevens 44-1/2 with Douglas .375 barrel doesn't have a throat friendly to breech seating so I'm going to try some fixed ammo.i have some of the CPA Mos 310g  bullet cast as well as the Ideal 330g  375166.

Ready go...

I will follow this with great interest! Just yesterday it dawned on me that my Ballard in 38-55 which doesn't seem to like anything I've tried just might surprise me with fixed ammo. I've spent over a year since I had it relined trying to get breech seated bullets of various designs and weights to yield decent results and so far no joy.

Very curious as to what your rifle's throat configuration is.Thanks for posting...

In my 18 twist Douglas barrel CPA I used to shoot hand cast 300 gr bullets with either 41 grs 2F Black or 15 Grs 4759. Both Fixed bullets, the 4759 loads shot to the same sight settings as BP, important to me at the time.

Switched to 245 G store bought plain base from Meister bullet co. and 17 grs 4227. Was using 16 grs extra grain performs better at 200 yards.

500 yards go back to the 300 hand cast and 15 4227 as substitute for 4759, think it will do better little more powder but shoot so little 500 never fully developed the load.

Results depend on the standard applied. All my shooting is offhand they do very well. Bench would breech seat.

I think I was using 21.2 grains of 4198 in the Stevens 44 1/2 I had.  Shot pretty well, but rifle didn't fit me all that well and the crescent buttplate bruised me up too much.   I also use 21.0 grains of 4198 with the same bullet in my button magazine Model 1894.  That's a hunting load, not a target load,  and works well for me.   No guarentees it will work for you.   You really need to simply start trying things.  Twist on the Stevens was 1 in 16; on the Winchester 1 in 18.

What about the Lyman 375449  264 gr over 9.5 grs of unique. I had pretty good luck with Arsenal molds copy of it in the real early Winchester high wall .38-55 I had a while back.

I use 6g for a very light plainbase load with the 375248  in a hi wall.
I'll give it a shot tomarrow with the heavier bullets and bump up the charge.

I've been shooting 9 gr of Unique behind a 250 gr Lee cast bullet in my 1906 vintage 1894 lever gun.
Pleasant load to shoot - can't say about accuracy, barrel is a sewer pipe.  Roll Eyes

I went out very with a pile of bullets and primed brass.the unique and cfe pistol that work wonders in my breech seat loads were not very good with fixed ammo and long heavy bullets.just about the time they stated to print round holes I got uncomfortable with way it was acting. I had no chronograph with me as it was 5am and not enough light.next time out I'll use 4198.

I shoot my Ballard Schoyen with a .38-55 muzzleloader barrel using fixed ammo as I don't like muzzleloading it. I use the old Hudson Ideal bullet and it shoots under 1 moa off a rest using Unique.

I had a couple inch groups but was loosing an.odd one that wasn't flying straight.
I've gone to Hodgdon CFE PISTOL in place of Unique For my low pressure single shot stuff.ive been very impressed with it this last two years.im.glad I bought 32# before this current "shortage "

These are the good groups with a Bud Welsh bullet breech seated.its just the throat it tight and its hard to push them in with much less than a hammer tap😀

When I first bought the Schoyen Ballard many years ago I took it out to our friend Bob's house and we set up a target at 100 yds, and of course shot out his front door as usual!
The load of Unique was some ammo I had loaded for another Ballard Union Hill that happened to have a groove size similar to the Schoyen, so took it along. We were pretty happy with the group size, so never experimented with anything else.

It's amazing the groups I've shot off of bobs old rickety table.

I have several 38-55 rifles. Some 14 twist; some 15 twist. All .375 nominal bore.
All shoot great with 24 gr. of Blackhorn 209.  250 gr to 370 gr. slugs. No air space.  0.060" wad behind the bullet.  A little compression is good.  I find bore riding bullets work best.
Performs great out to 500M (I don't have access to a longer range) .
Mike.

Cbashooter, the Ideal 375166 is my go to bullet in a 38-55. In a 1:18 barrel it calculates to 18.7.  I have MOA targets at 100–200 and 300 yds.  One day at Ridgway Rifle Range, I shot it from 500 meters back to 200 meters with BP … 50 consecutive rounds with no patching or blow tubing and the steel silloutes kept falling down with minor vernier setting adjustments
Accurate Molds has cloned the bullet in Toms inventory
