32-30 Remington information

Print Post
Just before leaving for the Quigley I completed a #1 1/2 rolling block for a client and planned on building the same for myself upon my return. While at the Quigley I was helping Kenn Womack set up his booth and uncased an original #1 1/2 center fire rifle in 32-30. We frequently trade items and the Remington is now in my keeping.  I am on my way home spending some time in Cody Wyoming at the museum. Upon my return I will be anxious to try it out. It seems like there was a discussion some time back on the forum about this cartridge concerning loads and forming cases from 357 Maximum. Any load information for my client and myself would be appreciated. Any case forming information would also be appreciated. Photos of the rifle will be posted in the photo section on my return to New Mexico. Thanks for your input.

According to Donelly:

FL size the 357 Max case, square case mouth and chamfer. Case is about .030" short but fine.

More info and load data in COTW, 3rd edition.

OK, somebody tell me what a 32-30 is.  Dimensions, rifles used in, bullets it likes, parent cartridge, etc.  Never heard of it before, and there is no info on the web about it.  Curious.

31356 This is the regular .32-30 Remington. (PB, FN, 125 - TP is 8

.32-30 REMINGTON-HEPBURN

This caliber was announced in 1880 for use in the Remington-Hepburn No. 3 single shot target rifle. The first know ammunition was manufactured in 1884 and no reason can be found for the time delay. Remington hoped this would be a long range hunting and target shooting rifle, but it never reached their expectations. During this same period of time the popularity of lever action guns had increase and the .32-30 cartridge was too long to fit in them. Interest in this caliber soon diminished and Remington stopped production of this caliber in 1912.

This cartridge is an unusual design as it is similar to that of the German Sauer cartridges of this time period. It is a necked cartridge; however, the neck is shallow and elongated which makes it difficult to determine where it begins and where it ends. The .32-30 Remington-Hepburn is capable of propelling a .312 dia., 125 grain bullet at 1,380 fps. with 535 ft.-lbs. of energy.

An original box of 50 cartridges I have paired with one of my rifles. I (we) are looking forward to seeing the photo of your rifle!

Really? How could Remington have ever expected a 125 gr. .32 caliber cartridge to ever even be considered a viable long range hunting cartridge? I can't imagine even using it as a mid range cartridge?
No wonder it failed.

Another reason for it's failure was it's length. Too long for the 1892 too short for the 1886. Strictly a single shot cartridge. I had one in a Hepburn and really liked it.

I have a Remington Hepburn in 3230. It is fun to shoot. I have acquired some data. It is kind of a collection of info.

All this information is really spiking my interest. I am anxious to get home and try the rifle out. While at the Quigley I also regained possession of a #2 rolling block in 25-20 from a friend that had tired of it. And a extremely nice condition Savage model 219 in 22 Hornet. Looks like the summer will be filled with experiments and load development.
