Javelina Schuetzen Lube in hot weather

I am trying JSL this year at the ISSA regional and the Canadian/USA benchrest challenge next week at the Stars and Stripes range in 9 Mile Falls WA.  The forecast for the first day is 106.  I had someone say that lube may be an issue at that temp.  Anyone have any experience on hot days.  On the west side of the state 80 degrees is too hot for me.

Used javalina in mid 90s many times no issues. Not sure if I have at over 100 but probably have.

Jack,

I use JSL, and used to make it. We shoot in over 100 degrees here at home most of the summer. I've never had a problem with it at over 100 degrees or below 32 degrees. At higher temps it does get a little more sticky when you handle the bullets, but it won't lead or cause any accuracy problems.

I wouldn't worry about the temp at all. You may shoot some of your best scores as some of the other lubes quit working when it gets that hot.

Thanks, Jerry,

It did hit 104 the last time I shot the match with my home brew lube but I don't recall what we were shooting.  I usually quit working at that temperature first though.  I did go out and buy a battery-operated fan today that might help me keep cooler.

I've had the same worry here in our recent hot weather, Jack. It does get very greasy. Last match I kept my ammo in the shade. No problems but might be a problem if left in a hot car or direct sun. Schuetzenbob tells me he keeps his bullets in a cooler with freeze blocks.

I've not had to do that for many years. Taking my lube with me just in case.

All through the '80s through about 2015 I used Smiley Schuetzen lube (original ALOX formula) for .32-40 with smokeless loads. Here in the Arizona desert, during those hot summer days of 100 degrees-plus, I kept my lubed bullets in a small ice chest. It was kind of a PIA but it worked. My only caution would be to not leave a seated bullet in a hot barrel for too long.

I'm curious as to why you say that Randy. The first thing I do after removing the fired case is to seat another bullet, even between relays. I've seen no ill effects from doing so.

Gets over a 100 here quite abit from now to September and I have had no issues with the JSL lube. Or leaving a bullet in the chamber as Jerry just also pointed out as I too have always done the same.
Looking forward to Randy's comments and personal experiences.

Jack, I may just bring my Montana Ballard along with me.  And the grease gun.

Too bad Fred Parkin can't get across the border.  He brings his mini refrigerator with him.

Of course , this is the year I am bringing over 1500 bullets since I am going to be trying a relatively new mold and have my old reliable bullet as a backup.

Sound like a styrofoam cooler is in my future.

Like you, my routine has been, to seat a bullet right after removing a fired case.
I have found that when the ambient temperature is over 100 degrees F, the barrel can get very hot. This time of year our highs run 105-115 (or more) but by that time of day the mirage runs so thick you can't see bullet holes at 200 yds. Schuetzen lube on a seated bullet can melt, causing leading, YMMV. That was why I finally switched to Alberta lube several years ago. How do I know the lube has melted? When extracted, a case has a thin coat of liquid lube on its mouth. Now . . . this only used to happen on the hottest of days.
Now that Schuetzen lube is available again, I bought a couple pounds and am still running tests of Alberta vs. Schuetzen. No conclusions yet, our summer heat is only now blazing, which will continue for the next coupl'a months.

My car is big and black with black interior. It gets really hot inside. On hot days I start it and let the airconditioner cool it down before getting in. Not sure the Javalina lube would stay on my bullets.

When we used vaspar lube years ago, many shooters kept lubed bullets in a  cooler.  Better to be safe than sorry.

Camp Jack is nice and shady, but a cooler will be insurance.

I have used Javelina Schuetzen Lube from the very beginning of my shooting hobbies. In fact I've found it works just fine for black powder silhouette if you are one that wipes your bore down with a moist patch between shots. We normally shot our schuetzen matches in over 100 degree temperatures form June-Sept. The temp. forecasts for this Sat. match is 106 degrees. There has never been any issues with this lube, even in a hot 25-20 load.
