Fun with the Ball & Williams Ballard

I had some fun at the range today. The old .44 long rimfire Ballard is a lot of fun to shoot. I've made 20 reloadable .44 long rimfire cases, so my shooting is limited. But after firing 10 rounds at 50 yards, I moved to the 100 yard gong. I was able to consistently make it ring. Not bad for a 157 year old rifle with stock barrel sights, home made rimfire cases and my aging eyes  Smiley

Congrats.  Sometimes you just wish the little fella could talk and tell a story.

Wow and how overly exciting is to see it still being able to be taken out and for you to continue shooting it!

Steve,

I always enjoy your posts and videos. Thanks for sharing them. Lots of time and effort working with a rimfire, but I'm certain you have fun all the while.

Thanks guys. Yes, I take great pleasure in bringing these treasures back to life. You may have seen this before, but this is a video I made the first time out with it.

I have one of those only in. 46 Ballard extra long  rimfire. It has been converted to centerfire years ago.  It uses. 45 long Colt  and hand loaded .460 S&W with a 260 gr. Lead bullet.  The bore is like new and it's  quite accurate.

Steve,
I really enjoy this thread and your video link. Have always liked old single shot rifles and it is great to see them resurrected and put back on the firing line.
My question is how is your ammo lubed? There doesn't seem to be any tumble lube on the bullet in the picture.

Thanks - glad you enjoy it.

That photo of the cartridge was taken before dip lubing. I use an old time factory heel bullet recipe. The bullet end of the cartridge is dipped in melted lube. It cools quickly to a non-sticky coating. I took this photo this morning at the range. Note the lubed cartridge atop the receiver.
