Grhert Hofhurhsmacher Munrhen Schuetzen Martini

My auction rifle showed up yesterday I have been looking for an affordable Martini style German rifle for a while and this plain Jane version suits me just fine.  There was some confusion as to the caliber, with the consigner saying it was an 8.15x46 but the barrel was marked 30-40 (over 30-30).  Sure enough, a chamber cast shows it is a 30-40 Krag.

Here is an edited description from the auction site:

Grhert Hofhurhsmacher Munrhen Model Schuetzen Martini Style, Consignor indicates
8.15 X 46R Cal., But barrel marked 30-40, MFG. 1920's,  30'' Octagon barrel.
The stamping on the barrel translates to ''Karl Gebert Royal Gunsmith Munich''.
The factory walnut stock carries a large undercut cheekpiece & a Schuetzen prong
style buttplate. The wedge-fastened forend has no checkering, but beavertail
cheeks. The stocks are very good & solid, despite having several long, but tight
grain cracks. There are some minor scratches & contusions. The metal finish on
barrel has toned to a nice even chocolate brown, with some minor scratches &
abrasions or edge wear. The receiver carries smokey outlines of faded
case-colors & remaining colors on the lower tang, in protected areas & on
internal parts. The large spur & scroll lever drops the lock & block & also
displays some faded case-colors. The tang is fitted with a unique large disk
peep sight, with key locking base . Barrel also incorporates a wider milled rib
for potential scope or rear sight mounting, while the front of barrel carries a
Lyman globe front sight. Bore is excellent. Double set triggers & a removable
trigger housing. Barrel Rifle carries a lower slotted rib which may have at one
time held a cleaning rod. This is a fine, hand crafted & custom built target
rifle.

Here are the auction photos.  Better that I could take Smiley

It appears that the interesting tang sight's stem does not actually fit the base.  I hope that misfitting does not play havoc with the rifle's accuracy.

It fits fairly well and is held tight by the screw. This will be strictly an offhand rifle so accuracy is secondary to my holding ability.

So Jack is it a 30-40 Krag? Even if it is not it should still serve you very well for all of your Offhand competitive needs. I believe and I could be wrong but I do believe the ISSA still has a very separate competitive match for these types of Riles at the International Match at Raton.

John
The chamber cast matches the altered barrel markings indicating that it is 30-40. We have a German match at Spokane as well which is why I bought it.  Since it was rechambered from 30-30, I checked with the match director and got a thumbs up.

Looks good,  did you make a long enough chamber cast to see what the bore  and groove dimensions are?  Make sure you arn't playing with a Jbore 8mm bbl.

I pushed a soft bullet through the bore and the groove diameter measures .3075

I hope to have some brass and dies by next weekend.  I got a starting load from frnkeore of 14 gr 4227.  I have shot that in 32-40 with acceptable accuracy.  The match is 20 shots.  I figure with 50 rounds I should be able to get 20 shots on paper.

Most interesting, What makes these old German schuetzens so interesting is the hundreds of variations. I don’t believe I have ever heard of one in an original American caliber, 22 rim fire excepted. Are you going to post photos of the proof marks under the forend if any? I would be interested if the proof marks provide any information.
Have fun

neat rifle, indeed. the load frank pointed you toward also did a good job in my high wall in that chambering. well, when I shot it with cast slugs anyhow. it does a whole bunch better with the roundnose jackets ones.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Neat rifle, and interesting rechambering caliber. I like the tang sight too! Appears the peep moves inside the eyepiece, instead of the whole eyepiece moving as most do?

Yep. There is a floating aperture about .55 in diameter with flats at 3 and 12 o’clock and a spring at 7:30. Loosen the eyecup which has a large hole in it and adjust the position and tighten the cup to lock in place. I am going to make a replacement aperture threaded for other eye cups

Vall,

Here are the sight parts.  The aperture is held against the two adjusting screws by the spring and when the locking ring/eyeshade is screwed in it locks it into position.  I made two others, one with a bit larger hole and the other threaded for other apertures.  A Merit and Parker hale will fit, but vastly limit the travel.  After I get it sighted in at 200, I will evaluate whether the adjustable apertures will work (if ISSA legal)..
