Lyman Super Scope 15x on a Shiloh 40-65
Jun 4th, 2021 at 8:38pm
Print Post
Hi Gentlemen,
I've enjoyed reading this forum for awhile and finally have a question for the experts here.  I have a Lyman Super Scope 15x and want to put it on a Shiloh 40-65.
Is this too much recoil for a scope like this or is it something that can and has been done in the past.
Thanks for your assistance!

Will be no problem.
If there is a spring on your scope, back it off from the front
mount.
The Lyman STS will slide in its mount thereby having an
"easy time of it re. recoil"
You just have to re set it-pull it back into "battery" before each successive shot.
I have been using my STS 15X on my 40-65 a lot. Again:
NO PROBLEM with the scope.

Should not be a problem, there have been a lot of them put on 06's.

Just be sure to do as Beltfed advised, and be certain to free up the recoil spring if your scope is equipped with one, or you will most likely end up with a Racoon eye at the very least. This can't be emphasized enough.

Thanks guys for the input.  This will be on the Shiloh as soon as   I find a good gunsmith locally to do the tapping for this first.  I'll post how this works out.  Thanks again!

What’s the maximum distance you plan to shoot the 40-65.  Height of blocks will be needed to allow range of distance

That's a good question.  We're definitely leaving Md next year. And while I could go home to Virginia, I'm thinking of cooler weather some where else.  Might be Utah, Wyoming or Nevada.  We'll see.  Of course as soon as the hot weather ends and it gets cold, we'll change our mind all over again.  Anyway, I'm thinking out to 300 yards would be fine.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

300 yds. should be no problem without special blocks.

Re. scope blocks/bases:
On that Shiloh, it will be good to use higher bases for that Lyman STS.  So you will have more clearance for cocking
that side hammer.

I've got the original bases (I believe they are) and they sit pretty low.  Where would I be able to get higher bases for the scope?

Two words... Steve Earle!  He’s been the official go-to guy for bases for years.
