Wow I personally have never witnessed one actually being that badly leaded as it appears to be. And thanks for the update I was wondering how it all went.

Pure turpentine can be had through or at artist a supply house. And yes it does smell different than the cheap hardware store choice.  Secondly, mercury has always worked like magic for me.

I just last night got all the lead out. My bore is ruined. Pitted all to hell. Don't know how. The solvent got under the lead and pitted the bore? Don't know. Throwing bullets sideways. D. D. and double D. Looking for a new barrel.

From the description of the extent and depth of pitting plus all the all the work so far done, I not not see how cleaning agents could do that much damage in one session.

Switching cleaning agents without using lighter fluid to clean the residue can be a big mistake. On a Savage 110S in .308 Winchester three decades ago, I used Sweet's and Shooter's Choice in succession one day. The combination lightly "frosted" the bore to where it would not shoot cast bullets. By "frosted", I mean the bore had a strange appearance with a bright light shined down it.

Jacketed was fine, but not cast. Three hundred strokes of J&B later, the rifle shot cast.

The pitting in all probability has been there for a long time, developing under the leading.  Of course, when you finally get the barrel clean, 1st reaction is to blame the solvent for it. But if you really have serious pitting, that needs quite a bit of time.
True, ammonia solvents like sweet can indirectly cause pitting because some components are hygroscopic, and the water will do the work.
Benn there, don that.

I know I'm late to the party (and am sorry to hear the condition of the barrel) but for posterity's sake, if this comes up again, may I recommend the tried and true "Lewis Lead Remover"?  I've used it a number of times in my revolvers with great success and now I see that they have a version for rifles and shotguns - (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

FWIW - Someone really needs to re-introduce the Outers "Foul Out" system.

That's how it got killed, if got the leading or jacket fouling outs so efficiently that people blamed it for the pitting they found underneath...

Youtube has several videos on making your own electrolysis bore cleaning set up. The main issue seems to be finding a formula for the cleaning solution that won't harm the bore. Here's one video:

I've been working on it almost 6 months.

The Outers Foul Out & home made electrolysis bore cleaning works great if they are used properly.  The problem was that many were left in the bore for extended hours or overnight unattended.  It can certainly etch the bore if left in too long.

I've been using one for years with no problems but the cleaning progress has to be periodically checked & definitely do not leave them on overnight.

Just having black patches might not actually be a sign of leading. And this is where a bore scope might come in handy.
