I saw that on Gunbroker and wondered how one could go about getting all of those punch marks out.  I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder but what a shame.  Tom

And that is a camo pattern on the action to break up its tell-tale outline.  It works just like polka dots on a woman's dress.

Some good old  fashion draw filing will take care of that, or maybe not. It might make the frame a little bit thin along the breech block. I was tempted to bid on it until ssdave  pointed out the welded on scope mounts. It is really a shame, as it appears to be a model 47-44 1/2 in a scarce caliber.

It’s too bad the records were lost, but I believe that might be one of the “engrave it yourself, with the dot to dot method” models. Grant mentioned it in “single shot rifles you’ll never see” page 2215. Wink

I had a rifle for a long time that every single part that was large enough, had the social security number of a previous owner engraved. Price was right and it was a good shooter. Never really bothered me. Things welded to the barrel would be a problem without shooting it first, unless bought for parts or planning on a re-barrel.

Might be able to polish out most of the punch marks, and maybe an engraver could engrave it over whatever remained to disguise whatever is left? But the barrel's bore is ruined by welding on the barrel, so you're really buying an action with good wood, and a 422 scope.
I found the seller's description pretty funny.
"It has a very nice wood stock with no cracks. Everything appears to be original."
Everything appears to be original?? Wonder what he's been smoking?

No sense in mocking it. It is what it is whether anyone here wants it or not. It probably served someone well enough and he or she was probably happy with what they did with it.

I've successfully polished out rust pits deeper than those punch pricks; and the bore is not necessarily "ruined" by the welding (though I doubt you could save the mounts, which I can only hope are Hi-Lux).  But I am mildly concerned about how and with what the two holes for the receiver sight were filled.

Judging from the number of lines scratched on the barrel, it has won a lot of matches;-)

I did notice the two filled holes on the left side also. At least the punch marks are only on the left side, plus a small design on the barrel. Someone might be able to save it, or live with the design.

Appears to be an example of Harlow Parkenfarker's -- a noted gunsmith -- work. Not signed, but in any event very distinctive work.
