Where have all the parts gone?

I picked up a couple of rifles (1873 and 1903 Winchesters) that need some parts. Homestead parts list everything I need on their website but guess what they are all listed as "not available". A good majority of their inventory is listed that way. And it in not just them it is apparently everybody. Where have all the parts gone. If you don't have the stuff then don't list it. Sorry for the venting but I have just about had enough of the virus excuse...

I just cancelled an order from Optics Planet I made a few weeks ago.  I didn't notice the fine print "will ship when available".  It was a lyman bullet mold, common type.  After I placed the order and put in my payment method, I got an email that it was expected to ship in "4-5 months".  I let it simmer a few weeks, then got another update that it was delayed, "expect 6 months".  Um....sorry, CANCEL.

Folks went to Gunsmithing School to learn how to make parts. If you don't use them they cannot make a living and support themselves and their family. If we don't use them too they will all simply no longer exist.

Optics planet did the same to me on MTM plastic bullet boxes. Cancelled instead of waiting. American made product made with American raw material. Bought the same boxes new off EBay. Refund came through slowly

If they don’t have it they should not take the order.

Not knowing what kind of parts below is probably still the best source for various firearms.

IMHO Numrich is a vendor of last resort.  Shipping worn out used parts is just one of their specialties.  Another is parts that are wildly out of spec.  Ask me how I know.   Angry

Second that on Numrich. Unless the parts they sell are new old stock factory parts, I'd never buy from them. I've sent back all sorts of parts that came broken, or missing pieces, and they were brand new. And some were just poorly made.
But I've purchased parts they bought from various firearms makers and they were all fine.

Totally agree Boats and I might have had them confused with the other one that I posted earlier.

I'd like to see parts suppliers for single shot rifles as a sticky. And if they specialize in any certain brands that would also be good to know.

How about Jack First Gun Parts?
(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

They may not have the parts you need but if they do I've heard good things about them.  And their thick reference manuals are an excellent source of firearm schematics.

Thanks for everyone's reply's. I have spent several hours on the net trying to find parts to no avail. I need wood for both and a few internal parts. I have a cousin that ran a shop for many years and is not long for this world (cancer) and he gave me these two in return for helping him sort through years of "stuff". I really wanted to get these two completed while he is still with us but I fear time is short. Yes I tried Jack First and no good. I will keep looking. Thanks everybody.

In regards to Numrich gun parts, I've had just the opposite experiences. I have ordered thousands of parts from Gun Parts Corporation (numrich) and never got a bad part that I needed to send back. I guess I've just been lucky.

One source that tends to get overlooked is Ebay. It seems people are always parting out old guns. Just a few weeks ago I bought a nice set of original #2 rolling block springs. Last year I picked up a really nice 1929 vintage m1894 Winchester in .32-40. The half cock not was broken on the hammer. I found a perfect original replacement on Ebay. I've also bought several original tang sights there.  Sure, Ebay can be hit or miss, but its worth checking.
