Smokeless 40-60 WCF powder of choice?

I have zero experience with BP but plenty of smokeless so was wanting to stick with familiar until I've researched enough to eventually go BP in my Hepburn. This is an original untouched rifle so low pressure loads will be the go. Was looking at either IMR 4198 or Hodgon Trailboss as smokeless candidates. From my research was looking at trying 20gr IMR-4198 or 11gr Trailboss behind a 210gr cast projectile for around 1200 fps. Which powder would give lower pressures? Want to shoot some game with this old girl!

i like the 4198  about 20 grains is a good start for black powder type pressures  you could probably go up to 22 gr.  depending on how heavy a bullet you use   art

40-60WCF? That's a rare bird. Assume you are cutting down 40-65 to get the correct length brass. I debated long & hard with myself before going with the 38-40RemHep instead of the 40-60WCF. Not sure I made a wise choice as brass prep for the 38-40RH is laborious by comparison.

BTW - to load an original Hepburn properly, you should use a full case of 1 1/2F or 2F Swiss powder. Guessing it will hold 50-55gr and will kill anything you might want to shoot with it (though not really a brown bear rifle).

Might try using 300MP I have had very good success while using it it various cartridges. In 25-35, 25-21, 28-35 and 32-40 and the burn rate is basically the same as 4759 but a ball powder. For the 405 / 40-70 my load was 22 grains using a 300+ grain bullet and it being breech seated.

Is that IMR or Hodgon 4227? I might be able to source some of that to try. We are severely limited with Powder choices in New Zealand... especially at the moment.

Either IMR or H 4227 should be okay.
