32-40 vs 30-30

I suspect this may have been discussed et-nausea before, but maybe there is current thinking; I'm considering a Schuetzen  rifle acquisition and have been leaning towards a 30-30 chambering instead of 32-40.
Other than the nostalgia of the 32-40, is there a good reason not to go the 30-30 route?  I have dies/brass/molds for both so components are not an issue other than I have plenty of 30-30 brass and limited 32-40.  I shoot smokeless if that matters.
Anyone have an opinion??????
Mike.

I've never breach seated the 30/30 but think it may have to much powder room and would only pick a .30 cal. over the 32/40 if it was a 30/30 Wesson IMHO.

I have a 30 Schwartz bench and offhand rifle, which is essentially a shortened 30-30 sans the shoulder. I also fooled with a 30-30 run into a 8.15 x 46 R die and accomplished almost the same outcome, but not quite a straight case. Both have worked well, but believe one should just stick with the tried and true 32-40. No need to try to reinvent the wheel. If you just like to experiment with something different, go for it. I did, a long time ago shoot a 30-30 Highwall, but found it lacking. Could have just been the pilot.

A friend has shot one in breech seated competition and it shoots really good. But I can't seem to recall the exact twist of the barrel right now but I believe its a 12 or even possibly a 10.

Ballards may be weaker,

Have wondered this same thing for decades? Why didn't shooters in the late 1800's and early 1900's not use the .30-30 for schuetzen? Was it because they had plenty of .32-40 new guns available and resisted trying it? Or did someone try it and it didn't do as well for them?

As some of you might know I built myself a 28-35 and now recently a 25-35 and both shoot extremely well in breech seating benchrest competition and the 30-30 should also do just as well. Some folks just tend to shy away from any of the bottle necked cases. That is probably why you haven't seen very many used for serious benchrest competitive use over the years. That would just be my own personal guess.

I happened upon a 32-40 Remington rifle-a rebarreled Brg BPCR High Wall.
It is actually a "true" 30 cal.  300/308 barrel, 8 twist.
It was originally to be a Midrange BPTR rifle intended to shoot up to 240 grain or so bullets.
But, I have used it some for Schuetzen main gun.
Seems to shoot well enough---for my level of shooting.
Brass is made from 303 brit brass, straight taper from base to neck.  Happens to have about the same case capacity as a 30-30. I can use that loading data for it.
200 grain bullet clocking about 1750fps

I think the 30-30 is terrific idea in our modern day. Back in the era of Schuetzen popularity, I think the powders available to the smokeless shooters (and, perhaps their primers) were not as workable as the familiar powders in the straight-sided case. I may be mistaken, but it's a good theory, based on the still heard admonition to avoid black (and similar) in shouldered cases, particularly smaller calibers.
