Since brass is non-existent for it, I would prefer to stick with the 30-40 brass as a basis for a wildcat unless I needed the stronger case, and then I think I would go with the 444 for a parent case.  The 307 was doomed from the start as the day of the lever action rifle dominating the scene was over by the time it came to being, just like the 7-30 Waters.  The 225 Winchester was another round that just didn't ever find a following big enough to keep it alive and it sure made a good combination in stronger single shot actions.  I understand that Winchester was also looking at a 40 caliber to go with the 307 and 356 but the lagging sales killed it before it was marketed.  Tom

Shorter 40 for lever action - - 40-60 maynard and 40-50 Sharps wpould both be great.

A shorter version was made, but before the .405 existed. The .40-63/70 Ballard, and the .40-70SS are both very similar, but shorter cases than the .405 Win. I use .405 brass for both of these calibers in my single shots.
I use .30-40 Krag, and .303 British brass chopped very short to make my .40-50SS cases.

Not to mention the 40-65Win.  The little cartridge that could.
Brass available from Starline and also easily made from 45-70 brass.

Don Bower (deceased) from Auroa, Colorado developed a whole line of wildcats on the 307 Win. case.  He orginally developed these for the Thompson Contender but used them in some Ruger # 1 rifles for 1000 yd. shooting.  I had them in 22, 7mm and 30 caliber.  The case was blown out somewhat straight with a 40 degree shoulder.  The dies were shortened to bump the shoulder back about .005 head spacing on the rim.  Bullets were seated to touch the land.  I only have one now which is the 30 Alaskan Bower. I kept it because it was so easy to form brass.  One only had to drop a 307 in and fire it like an Ackley.  Hunted with it for several years it took elk, deer, antelope and once got a turkey with it.  Don and his brother did long range shooting with these wildcats.  I took some lessons from them and have shot some amazing groups at 500 meters with a 14 inch Contender.  Don was instrumental in Burris developing the 10x pistol scope which we used extensively.  Hated to see the two brothers pass,

Don was my son's coach when he ran the Junior League program at Cherry Creek range in Aurora some 30 plus years ago. A good man, who encouraged and dedicated effort to the shooting sports for the young. Saddened to hear of his passing.

Don't forget the various European Rimmed cases such as 7x 57R, 7x 65R, 8x57R, 9.3x74 etc as they may be viable to use for Wildcatting

Westerner,
You were one of the lucky ones to have been personally familiar with Don. The rest of us can only read about his work.
