Stevens 44 38-55 case dragging block.

Take a look at this, I can barely chamber a 38-55 in this rifle.the case rim drags heavily on.the breech block. It was originally 32-40 is the  possibility the 32-40 chambered easier due to the tapered case.
Did Stevens put a little radius on the 38-55 model?

And yes, I understand the strength limitations of this cartridge and the gun.

By chance did you fit a new extractor? Try taking out the extractor and see if the breech block will drop down a little more, if so remove a little metal from the extractor where it is limiting travel. That’s my best guess.

Extractor is factory and marked 38-55. I didn't look at the geometry of a but I didn't think the extractor would limit the breechblock movement. I guess I'll check.

My 44 in 38-55 has plenty of clearance.

Appears the extractor is limiting the drop of the block. All though it is not touching the case it is probably touching the block further down inside of the recess itself. Try taking the extractor out and see how far the block will then drop down. And look for any marks on the extractor that might be touching and if so relieve that area abit.

looks like your breech block is not dropping low enough   some 44s  have a plunger that can bind up and not drop the block low enough    art

I'll take out the extractor and see what happens.

Thank you everyone

Problem solved!!
I took the assembly apart and put it on the outside of the action to see how things mated up. I  discovered the bottom part of the extractor where the pin goes through that hits the lever to start extraction needed just a little bit off to allow the block to drop.

Thanks  for everybody's help.

I had a similar problem with a Stevens way back. Difficulty getting the cartridge to go into the chamber. I went in but was tricky. Can't recall the details at the moment.

I'm quite jealous of your Stevens. Have a 32-40 and have looked for a 38-55 on and off for years. Awesome rifle.

That's kind of the opposite of me. I wanted one in. 32-40 but this one came available so I just snagged it.

End of that barrel looks very odd.  Should be flat, and the BB should clamp up against it.
