End of that barrel looks very odd.  Should be flat, and the BB should clamp up against it.

That's kind of what I thought too but everything seems to lock up pretty parallel

Is the back of the breechblock tight against the shoulders in the frame when the action is closed?

Good.  Having the shoulders in contact takes a lot of load off the link.  If they're not, the load on the BB pivot screw is very high. John Taylor showed us a breechblock torn right apart.

I just went down by the house in my little 50 yd range in rann 10 test loads out of it over the hood of the truck. I used 20 g of 4198 and a tapered  265g Welsh design.

Everything went pretty well
the bottom group is with the barrel sight and the top group is when I flipped up the Lyman.

I cast the  bullets about a 1/2 hour before I shot them and just rubbed lube on them.

Primers looked great and everything seems fine so it looks like there might be a little bit of promise with this one.

The back of the barrel on my early 44 in 32-40 has the same chamfer.

Thanks for confirming that because I swore another 44 I saw a few years ago had a very similar breech end.

Trying to make it look like a Maynard?  It almost looks to me like the rim will be exposed.

Stevens purchased the Massachusetts Arms Co., maker of the Maynards, in 1883.  Perhaps there's some connection, though I'd guess the 44 in question was built some 20 years later.

Based on features I can see, it's 1896 to 1900.

I'm speculating that maybe the bevel has the same function as it did for the Maynard - to let the shooter get a grip on the rim of partially extracted shell to remove it.

I'd very much like to add this one the the Model 44 database.

Do you want me to get you a picture of the serial number on the barrel?
It does not match receiver number btw

Yes. please.

And that answers the question of whether it's the original barrel.

The guy I bought it from took the 38-55 off of another gun and put it on this one and luckily it indexed. He said he did nothing to the breech end.
