Ballard questions

I have a few more questions about my chrome Ballard.  There are the two holes in the action face where pins are on my Pacific.  Were these present on different models?  There s also a shallow hole on the bottom of the action.  Any idea why?  It is not very deep as evidenced by the screw next to it.
The action is also missing the fly so no 1/2 cock (which I don't use anyway).  I found one at the Rifle Shoppe.  Does anyone know if they are still in business?

Thanks

Jack

Judging by the mark on the lever from the screw, my guess is the screw was added to limit the extractor travel.

Interesting observation are Ballards know for having the case rim going past the extractor with some cases.

Good observation.  That does seem to be the case.  The screw limits both the extractor travel and the hammer height when the lever is fully open.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

No they are not. But often times odd hard to find brass requires you to substitute a donor brass that has a little smaller rim. This will result in needing to be careful when chambering to ensure the rim stays behind the extractor. Not an issue isolated to Ballard rifles, but something fairly common with any cartridge not easy to find brass for.
Another issue is when people build Ballard rifles from actions and extractors designed for CF cartridges, but use that type extractor for .22RF cartridges. The arc of the extractor's travel often makes a situation where it loses contact with a small .22rf rim, and then too the case can slip past.

Ballard rifles usually have the two holes for pins on a Pacific, but only have the pins if they are a Pacific, Montana, or the 4 3/4 single trigger Pacific models.
Not sure why your action has two holes by the lever, but as 830singleshot mentioned it appears to be a lever stop. Not sure why it would need one, as I've never seen this before.

Two of my Ballards are easy to get the rim behind the extractor. Easy to do when the extractor comes way back.

Forty years ago I got bit by a Pope Highwall .22RF when the rim slipped past the extractor. On closing the action it set off the cartridge before the block got behind the case. I literally saw the case backing out of the chamber before it came apart and filled my face with shrapnel. I wouldn't recommend it.

Quite common when a CF is converted to .22RF and the CF extractor is used. I've got three Ballard schuetzen rifles that started out as CF actions, and converted to .22RF, and need to watch them carefully when loading.
But I have four #3 with 2 piece sliding factory extractors, and they never slip past when loading. The straight sliding extractors work very well.

I only have one #3 and the one #3PG both with two piece and they are a charm. I relined the #3 and it is a tedious job boring the hole for it when the liner cuts half way into it.
