Merrimack Ballard at LGS

Saw one today in 44 (reversible firing pin I think). Barrel not too bad, wood good. Manual extractor, of course. Must have been on consignment as the price was knocked way down but still $800.

In my opinion, if it's a sporting rifle, if it's better than a "clean brown gun", if the firing pin is indeed reversible and it's a .44 (rather than a rimfire-only .46), and if you're willing to make your own ammo, $800 is not that far off.  You could counter offer $600 and see where that goes.

That seems like a reasonable price. I've been making reloadable .44 rimfire for my Ball & Williams Ballard. It's a lot of fun.

Technically they are known as "TLA's".  ***

I'm not positive, but pretty sure no Merrimacks had reversible firing pins. What they had was either rimfire, or percussion hammers that could shoot rimfire ammo, or poke a hole in a empty RF cartridge, and use a percussion cap on the nipple to ignite the charge.
At $800 if it's even halfway decent, and unaltered it's a good buy.

Well, it was definitely marked 44 on the barrel. I just had a quick look since I have my 44-40. The slot in the block for the firing pin was quite long but maybe more narrow than my #2. I haven't looked at one marked Merrimack before so I have no comparison. The extractor moved easily and they really extract a long way! Whatever, it looked like it could be fun;-)

WE are a support group here, get it!!! Then post pictures and let us know the steps you take getting it shooting.  Besides, Ballards add ten years... Grin Grin Grin

So GT does that mean the Ballard I got this week made me 80 instead of 70?  No wonder I can't hold center offhand.

Vall, I'd call it "interesting" and if I didn't have my #2, I might have been tempted. Fortunately, I'm saving up for the Denver Show;-)

No Jack  Grin Grin Grin
it should make you feel 60, unfortunately like you, I'm struggling trying to make these Ballards stop moving in the offhand position. Just this afternoon we had a side bet going at the 400 yard mark - that target used to sit still for me... couldn't hit it if it had been twice the size..

OAT, I'm using that as an excuse also, but then there is the Rapid City show in a couple weeks...

I'm saving for Denver also, but we'll have our OAC show here Aug. 28-29 too, if our stupid governor ever reopens the state!

Hey Vall, if GT is right about the 10 years younger per Ballard thing, does that mean you haven't been born yet?  Roll Eyes Cool Grin
