That's what this one is.  Has a modern barrel on it.  Shoots under 1moa at 50 yards with Federal UM-1 ammo.  Unfortunately I wasted what I had practicing, not knowing that there wasn't going to be any more.   Cry

Not surprised. The Ballard rifles converted are rarely done up with a proper extractor for .22RF. I've got 3 that by chance are all built on heavy forged frames like the #6 Schuetzen, and converted to .22RF, with CF extractors. One is a #6 Schuetzen built by Zettler Bros. and has a Winchester barrel with offset shank so the CF firing pin strikes the edge of the .22 Short barrel.
Other two are a AW Peterson and a Pope, in .22LR with the same CF extractors. All cause some frustration loading to not slip past the extractor. But they all extract just fine.
My Cody Ballard is also built with a one piece CF extractor, but surprisingly it catches the rims fine when loading. Never had it apart to see what they did to limit travel on the extractor, so it catches the rims fine?

Drilling that hole endwise in the barrel needs a horizontal mill, which most shops don't have anymore.

Always found it somewhat humorous that in the 1800's they could do so easily, but today gunsmiths talk about what a pain the 2 piece extractor is to do.

Long long time ago I bought badly abused Marlin action, a #3 from the groove in top of the receiver, which has a slot broached in the receiver, through the barrel thread, for a slide at the 6:00 position.  No need for the hole in the barrel.

Sure seems like Jerry's and Greg's extractor would work as well, maybe better.
Simpler to make and install.

I've done quite a few. 22 Ballard barrels and put in two piece extractors. I made a drill jig it has a plug that fits into the. 22 chamber and a hole for the drill at the appropriate spacing ,and then I drill the hole with an electric hand drill. Works very well.

Yes the systems Jerry and Greg used for their Ballard builds is much improved over the factory setup, and would be much simpler to do also.
The sliding extractor functions the same as the original, but not having a round hole it keeps the extractor oriented much better than the original did.
I have a #1 Rolling block converted to .22LR and using the same T shaped sliding extractor system. It's a great gun to shoot, and works flawlessly both loading, and extracting.
