52k serial, long tang buttplate, 28" #2 barrel, marked 25Wcf, but, chambered in 25-20 SS!, neat little rifle and a neat anomaly. Anyone else seen one mismarked? Thanks, moodyholler

I have a Winchester M1885# 67xxx, marked 25-20 WCF, but chamber is a .25-20 Single Shot. Winchester #3 half octagon to half round barrel. Receiver color cased. Nickel/German silver prong butt plate. Winchester windgage with spirit level front sight and Winchester tang sights. Maddis' book sez made in 1893. Barrel was drilled and tapped for scope.

All the 25-20SS Low Walls were marked 25-20 WCF untill Winchester started making 1892's. Then they changed to calling their cartridge the WCF and the original the SS.

I , too had an example of the Win LowWall "25-20WCF"/actually a 25-20 SS Stevens- ctg designed by Rabbath. Not all that uncommon in Low Walls.
Another case in which Winchester kind of took over another
company's cartridge as their own.

Somewhere I still have a Winchester barrel that was on a High Wall, chambered .25-20 Stevens, and marked only "25 20" (no WCF).  Took it off because it shot patterns no matter what I did.

My low wall wasalso  marked 25-20 WCF, but there was no doubt about it being a 25-20 SS.   That one was made in 1889.   I think after about 1892 or 3 Winchester probably started marking them 25-20 (SS)  or 25-20 WCF.   That would have been after they came out with the shortened 25-20 for the Model 1892.

I now have two 25-20SS Low Wall 1885's with patent date 7/1879,  both of  which have just 25 20 with no nomneclature stamped under the bbl. One is serial no 112963 , and the other is serial no. 119404, both are hex bbls. I hadn't thought about the apparent conflict/omission, most interesting!!

Since you have TWO, do you have enough to share?

I also have a circa 1902 Low Wall in 25-20 Single Shot.  But it's marked 'S.S.' behind the numbers on the top flat.

Your low-wall is not mismarked.  Winchester marked all of the pre-1895 Single Shot 25-20 Single Shot rifles with "25 W.C.F.".  It was only after Winchester introduced the 25-20 W.C.F. (repeater) cartridge that they began marking them "25-20 S.S.".  I discussed this specific topic in a recent article I published in the WACA Collector magazine, "The Model 1885 Single Shot Rifle Calibers and  Cartridges"

If the barrel on your high-wall is marked 25-20 W.C.F., it is not original.  S/N 67000 was manufactured March 10th, 1894, and S/N 67999 was manufactured July 12th, 1894.  All S/Ns in the 67000- 67999 range were manufactured before the 25-20 WCF cartridge as introduced.

Interesting... both should be marked "25-20 S.S. on the left side of the barrel in plain view.  The caliber markings on the bottom of the barrel would be just "25-20".  The barrels are octagon (8-sided) versus hexagon (6-sided).

Do they both have a standard 28-inch No. 1 barrel ?

Is it safe to assume that the same holds true for Winchester lever guns. Growing up I shot one in 25-20 SS and some say it had to be a 25WCF instead but was not.
