Am a novice with Low Walls, but it would appear that the depth of the gap between the upper tang and the lower tang changed around below 100xxx and above 100xxx, as I have found that the "back" bolt through the butt stock from those rifles with a serial no. below 100xxx protrudes about 3/16" below the bottom tang, is this because there was a change in dimensions, or have I just got some rifles with "non factory"  rear bolts?, Bought the last 25-20SS because I thought I was getting a longer rear bolt , which would let me mount a rear peep sight (for free), looks as though I fooled my-self, all and any advice greatly accepted, david a.

Is it safe to assume that the same holds true for Winchester lever guns. Growing up I shot one in 25-20 SS and some say it had to be a 25WCF instead but was not.

Winchester never made a lever-action repeating rifle chambered for the 25-20 S.S. cartridge.  Beginning in 1895, the Model 1892 was chambered for the 25-20 W.C.F. (a necked down variant of the 32 W.C.F.).

The was no dimension change to the low-wall receiver frame in the serial number range you mention.  I highly suspect that the tang screw has been replaced.

Additionally, if you intend to mount a tang sight, you need a different tang screw.  The tang screw must be longer than the original screw, and it must have a smaller head diameter so that it seats into the recessed mounting hole on the tang sight.  The factory original tang screw has too large of a head diameter.
