Springfield Trapdoor

Was thinking about putting one of these together. I just put two of them together for a customer. Both had carbine stocks that looked  like new reproductions with cartouche's. I haven't been able to find out who made them so far. If any of you know about these and the best place to go shopping for parts, please let me know.

I would go to the Trapdoor Collector's website run by Al Frasca. He always has parts available on the website and a list of other vendors such as Red Dougherty who is also a great person to deal with.
Make sure the width of the stock matches the receiver, receivers with a SN over 100,000 are the wide variety, the earlier ones are narrower. Make sure the sear matches the tumbler, three position tumblers require a sear that differs from the sear used on a two position tumbler.
A good option is to find an original trapdoor that has a great bore and cut down wood, with at least 4" of wood extending beyond the sling swivel. You can add a tin nosecap, shorten the barrel and put better sights on, such as a Beach combination front sight or whatever you want, weld an extension on the tang and mount a tang sight, (or mount it to the wood), a trigger job and  refinish the wood and metal and you have a great rifle.  Add some checkering if you want to dress it up. A wiping rod under the barrel is a nice touch. You can probably find such a  cut down rifle cheaper than finding parts, but parts are still plentiful and prices are actually leveling off or dropping a bit in recent years.  The attached photo shows a rifle I dressed up, this one has a new barrel but there are lots with good original barrels out there. Joe S.

A Trapdoor or Trapdoor sporter are on my wish list.  I can even see one in the distance... coming nearer...

Just picked up a Hawken style Trapdoor stock from Treebone to build a 40-50 BN Sharps on. Nice piece of Turkish walnut.

A good friend Warren Brier has been shooting a carbine at the Quigley match now for a few years. He is a very talented retired machinist and a shooter and he also made a set trigger for his and the first one that I have seen. I would imagine those who have attended that match  already know him he has been attending that match for several years now. And has done quite well shooting a different rifle in the Senior Class a few years back.

Bragging again, old post, but set triggers are certainly possible on a Trapdoor.
Now about a 2 minute rifle out to 500 yards.

Chuckster,
I like it when you brag,  Wink you've earned it on that one! Thanks for posting that link.  I'll need to look at that closer when I get back to my computer.

I had a TD in 32-20 once about 50 years ago. Actually it had an 03 Springfield barrel on it so I guess it was really like a CPA 32-20 but I never thought to use heavy bullets in it.

First single shot rifle I bought was a 1884 Springfield Trapdoor, beautiful gun and fun to shoot. I actually purchased it from a member on the forum.

More like a 30-20 TC
I had a 32-20 Martini with a 1-10 throated for heavy bullets back in the 90s.it was a fun gun.

The CPA is basically an 8.15 Helbieg.he wrote it up in a magazine 20 some years back.i can't find the article though
