Stevens Barrel Profiled for a Ballard Rifle
Mar 10th, 2021 at 7:22pm
Print Post
I recently bought a Ballard 3F rifle that has a Stevens barrel. At first I thought it was a put together gun like so many Winchester and Remington barrels we've all seen on Ballard actions. However, this barrel is profiled like a Ballard barrel with the tulip transition at the face of the receiver. The Stevens markings are correct and the barrel is stamped with the rifle's serial number.

Does anyone else have an example like this?

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

I've seen Ballard rifles with barrels put on at Stevens. Never seen one with the tulip and contoured like a Ballard before though?
I've seen them rebored and rifled by Stevens also. I have a #3 rebored to .25 Stevens RF, but it's marked under the forearm, not exposed.

Joe
About 20-25 years ago my friend Bill Wimberley bought a numbers matching 38-55 pacific Ballard with a Stevens barrel.  The barrel was profiled exactly as the pacific and serial numbered to the Ballard frame.  It had the pacific forearm, thimbles and ramrod along with a Ballard tang and windgauge front sight.
The local elderly man he purchased it from told him that his father and 2 other local men sent their rifles to Stevens at the same time and had them rebarreled.
I didn't know until after the fact that he had sold it Sad

Joe, my #3 Ballard has the same .25 RF stamp, but it too is under the forearm. I understand someone not wanting the Rebored by J Stevens stamped where it shows, but thought the caliber should have been visible?
I've always thought there was some miscommunication where the customer told them not to have the rollstamp show, but surely didn't mean the caliber rollstamp to be hidden also?

Everything on your barrel looks like Stevens work, except the shape of the barrel done to match an original Ballard contour.

From the Stevens #51 catalog, 1904. Note that the lightest weight barrel cost $12, when a plain 44 1/2 was priced at $12 in the catalog.

Even if others have not seen the same in the past. Steven's like others at the time would also do whatever the customer wanted to be done.
