Advice on cleaning rod and bore guide for .22 rf

Print Post
I have a really nice C.Sharps Low Wall that I plan to start shooting BPCR Silhouette this year.  Any advice on which rod and bore guide to use?  I use the Mike Lucas guides and Dewy rods for every thing else, but can't find a solution for the 1885 low wall.
Thanks

I also have a CSA LW in 22LR.  I have a Dewey coated 20C 38" coated rod and a Dewey 17A thread-adapter to use with .22 nylon brushes.  I never use brass brushes unless serious cleaning is need.

I never have found a chamber guide ofany type for 1885s.  For centerfire I use a drilled-out cartridge case

Second the 20 cal rod.  Much less chance of rubbing the bore and easier to slide through a drilled out empty case.

For nearly all cleaning, a rod is not needed on a .22.

I clean fairly often to remove fouling, but rarely solvent clean or brush unless accuracy drops off.

I clean using a piece of weed eater string.  Cut off an appropriate length.  Melt one end into a ball.  Use a sharp knife and cut a long diagonal cut off the other end, so that you end up with a sharp tapered point.  Poke that through a patch, slide it down to the balled up end, and pull it through the bore.  Clean, without a chance of damage.  You can wet solvent a patch, too, and then follow with a dry one.  Just can't do a tight patch, or it pulls over the melted end bead.  If you got really serious about this, you could experiment with finding a bead the right size with a hole in it that would go on the weedeater string, and then melt the end to it to hold it.  You could even turn a small cylinder on the lathe, and drill a hole in it to slide onto the string.  Then, find the exact patch size to work, and cut a bunch of them.  This would allow you to use an optimally tight patch without it pulling over the melted end.

I use one piece Tipton Graphite Rods for cleaning the bore on all my rifles and handguns.  No chance of bore damage.

I've got Dewey rods also, and love them. But I do as ssdave does for cleaning .22 caliber target bores, and use weedeater line to pull patches through. I don't use brass brushes on my bores. Unless it's an old barrel that's leaded up when I buy it and needs a thorough cleaning.

I was thinking about a Hoppe's bore snake, but it has the brass brush embedded. I think the weedeater line is a great idea.

I do use a 20 caliber rod and I also made a brass Parker Hale wrap jag to be able to use with the rod.

I always thought it was more important to clean out the carbon ring in the chamber rather than the barrel.

I like the 20 cal rod with a guide idea. I'll most likely never do it as we don't shoot much anymore.

I've used the weedeater string but lately use fishing line. Tie a loop in one end and pull a patch through.

In recent years, I do the fishing line pull through and I slide a few way undersized craft beads, from my wife's stash, down to the knot to pick up a bit more patch contact.

I have only been using a brush on a short pistol rod, occasionally, to clean the front of the chamber. I mark the brush so I don't push it in too far. I have made a big switch to Bore Tech solvents, so I'll use a bit of their rimfire blend if it seems needed.

With my .17 and .22 calibers I use the pull-through Patchworm setup.  Weed wacker string with felt buttons and cotton patches.
