Previously linked as for sale in that section.  Stock has been cleaned up and new sights.  Been looking for one in this configuration.

Ballards may be weaker,

Removed the wood and used stripper.  I'm not sure what was on it but I took it back to bare wood.  Previous "finisher" had sanded it. All of it, including checkering. It needed block sanding to level a couple of areas that were wavy from hand sanding. The flat checkering wasn't all wear.  Repointed the checkering and refinished with true oil. I didn't keep track but at least 15 coats before the pores were filled and I had an even finish.  Not perfect, but it's not a museum piece.  It will be used!

Really fine job on the checkering and tru-oil finish. I wonder what the factory finish was? Both of mine look like they could be oil, but I can't imagine any recent manufacturers using that method. Looks great on yours though!

That is a pretty looking piece of Claro, and well oriented in the grip. But I do not think that wood was done by Ballard, at least not while in Wyoming. The checkering style and general outline of the stock looks different. There would never have been any wavy spots on one either. Some were sold as barreled actions for customers to do their own wood and then returned to blue and case when the wood was done. I'm guessing that might be one. The case hardening does look right, not many others get that look. Hope I'm not raining on your parade, I've got a Ballard from Cody I did my own wood interpretation on.

No rain here! I don't care who did what, it's the right rifle, configuration and look!
