Form follows function, I am surprised not seeing more used, much easier than carrying a wrench around, I am sure they have been around from at least the Civil War. I have seen some older ones, that would look more at home on a single shot rifle, perhaps nickel plated or case colored, or cadmium, smiley face( still don't know how to add emoji (sp) Krag and God bless the whore that goes to church!!

Considering that our Machinist Genius GT has used inner tube bands to hold on his forearms, the wing nut seems a minor infraction.  And by the way, I have a couple of nearly antique examples in my parts bin that have shapely wings and if plated would likely look quite nice.  As rbka2nd notes, a wing nut does beat having to carry a wrench along.

Gotta love em. Ridin in Those 60's and 70"s Caddies was like floating on a cloud. You needed binoculars to see the hood ornament.

My oldest kid was a replacement sideman (guitar, dobro) with that crew for a couple of months.  He quit, said "Dad, I could get into real serious trouble hanging out with those guys".

Canjar had a nice way of doing them, and easy to operate. A simple square threaded block, with a round rod pressed into a hole. I have one of these on a Winchester 52.
