Reddi-Rest, Sporting Rifle Bi-Pod

Hi All, as anyone who has read my earlier posts I do have an affinity for older style rifles and hand guns. IN keeping with that theme I'd like to share an unboxing video of an item I acquired at a recent auction which I can only describe as an early rifle bi-pod.

I had one I used to keep in my hip pocket while deer hunting, and it worked OK for certain situations. Don't think they're all that old though?
I found that often the prone angle wouldn't allow me to get on target, or even fairly short grass lands were tall enough to interfere with my aim.

Actually I bought it more out of curiosity then anything else - I've been working on a set of shooting sticks and just wanted to se how these work.

Hey MG, I actually bought (2) of these an 8" version and 12" version. I'm toying with the idea of building a much taller custom versions for shooting seated.

Only problem is as they get taller, the legs get much further apart. That wont be an issue at a range, but would be if used in the field. Where I hunt grasses often get a couple feet tall, which is great for concealment, but bad for short bipods. I've gone to carrying tall cross sticks, and use them as a walking stick until needed. I made mine so I can shoot from a seated position comfortably, and adjust spread on the legs for uphill, or downhill shots.
Really need height adjustment on bipods or cross sticks to work well. These type don't allow any, so you're always trying to raise or scrunch your body to get the sights on target.

FW Mann describes an adjustable combination walking stick/rifle rest.  I've made one and find it very handy.

I've got a monopod stick with a Y in the top I bought many years ago also to try out hunting. I figured since it was collapsible, and could be adjusted for height it might work well as a support, and a walking stick too. But I found the monopod to be less than satisfactory as far as stability. The taller I extended it, the more I could sway side to side, so for accurate shooting it wasn't great at longer shots.
The adjustable cross sticks serve my hunting, and casual shooting needs better than anything else I've found. Mine use a leather strap to set how far apart the legs spread, which adjusts height too. And the leather strap makes them easy to sling over a shoulder if I am walking and don't use them as a walking stick.
I have a tall set for sitting in a chair, or kneeling, and sitting on the ground. Lots of adjustment. I have a second set that's designed to use prone, and are very short. They fit in my backpack, and I like them for the range, or hunting. My friend Wind built both sets and called them Okanagan Shooting Sticks. He had the leather done by Karla at Purdy Gear, and they're great sticks for shooting.
