How rare is a 34 inch barrel on a high wall? (Read 1942 times)

	I have this 1889 made high wall in 32-40. Its been relined so the collector value is low. It is in nice shape over all. Was curious how rare is a 34 inch barrel? I've thought about seeing if it would letter.

	Well if it has Winchester Roll stamp on the Barrel it may well be. I have owned two M1885 Winchesters with original 34" barrels. One had been a smaller caliber and rebored to 45-70, #4 Full octagon. It shot well but was a bear to deal with offhand. The other was a 32-40 also #4 full octagon, it was in poor shape inside still though shot better than I could hold so it went down the road also. Winchester would create various barrel lengths to order. They were however priced at so much an inch, I forget the price but it is in the Winchester Single Shot books, I forget the Volume #. Also they were made by or in the Custom shop to order. I think what happened is one of the Custom shop guy's would go out ono the production floor and take a standard Machine not in use and set it up for the making. So in most cases they were well made barrels. Was yours an original 32-40 relined or was it some other caliber, Huh! just thought it might have been the one I owned. If it is or was originally a 32-40 that would at least I think increase its value to some one. Well good luck with it. FITZ, OLD TUCK

	It's marked 32-40 full octagon Winchester factory barrel. Looks to be the original barrel.

	Good morning, I have a 32-40 Highwall with a 34" full octagon barrel that letters to 1892. It was a custom order, though the letter didn't give any information on what sigshts or other accessories it may have come with, nor who ordered it. My rifle has less than 50% of the finish left, but it is tight, and has a very good bore and shoots well. It is a heavy beast for offhand, that's for sure!

	ThreeArrowJoe Yes, any thing ordered that was different in barrel length in some way, Longer, Shorter whatever, was special order and was handled in the Custom shop. The production floor at Winchester was just not setup to deviate in any way from any thing not a standard model. The custom shop guy's were picked out from the regular workers when they stood out in quality of the work they produced. Just meant that they had showed that they could be relied on to produce a satisfactory product for the customer and protect the company's reputation. FITZ. OLD TUCK

	Fitz do you happen to know the year one could no longer order a Schuetzen rifle from Winchester. I used to see them still being listed in the rifles section as still being available in the Shooting Digest in the 60's and possibly even in the early 70's as well.

	John I had not heard of any thing like that. The Information I have is that Winchester sold the complete inventory of M1885 parts to R F Sedgley around 1953/1955 and he was assembling standard Hi and Low Walls from that stuff. I have one and it has what appears to be Winder Barrel that is marked .22 WCF and directly under that is stamped "HORNET" Farther forward on the Barrel is stamped R F Sedgley. For all intents and appearance this rifle is pure Winchester except for the Caliber stamps and the Sedgley name. I do know because I have a Rifle I built restoring a 32-40 Schuetzen with an as new #3 32-40 with new barrel that had been shipped to a Gunsmith in California. Winchester stamped these under the Forend with a Circle with O F inside. That indicated it was an outside fitted barrel. It screwed right in and pulled up correctly with no adjustment for fit. And it shoots as good as any of my all original Schuetsen Rifles. FITZ, OLD TUCK.

	Thanks Fitz I have that Gun Digest issue somewhere around this place and its interesting to why they would even be still showing it back in rifles still available section in the Digest. Thanks again my curiosity has now been resolved thanks to your input.
