I look down the left side of the postings, and most have what looks like a sheet of paper, but one has a ? mark, and another a thumbs down. What does this mean, and how do they get there?

When you create a new message, you can choose a "Message Icon" to help convey the mood of the post. The default icon is just a sheet of paper, but if the post is a question, you could pick the question mark icon, or if its a joke you could pick the Laugh icon.

They purely add some flair to the posts is all.
