	Looking for some one who has the index for the Rifle and Shooting and Fishing reprint by Broadfoot. I remember reading about a hunter out west talking about his hunting Elk with a 35-55 Maynard . Would like to get the page number. Thanks in advance

	Shooting and Fishing, Volume 11, No. 8, Dec. 17, 1891, Page 8 or Binder 10 of the Broadfoot Series, Volume XI, 1891-1892, Page 148. Column titled: Notes from Wyoming "Not long ago I heard some great praise for the Maynard .35-55-170 as a large game weapon. Its owner, a well known hunter from the Big Horn Basin, claimed to have killed innumerable deer and elk with it in the Big Horn Mountains, but whether he would care to face a grizzly with it is more than doubtful. C. Lost Cabin, Wyoming."

	Interesting. I have a 35-55 Maynard chambered barrel for the Brg BPCR. Looking at the cartridge in a modern rifle like the Brg, AND loading it with smokeless should make it a good performer on deer and elk. Surely could be loaded up like my 358 Win- 250 grain paper patch bullet clocking 2350fps. The rimmed cartridge, formed from 30-40K brass would be a perfect fit in a Modern Brownchester/Miroku M1895 . beltfed/arnie

	I have a 35/55 Maynard. The barrel is not so good but probably shootable. I have a 35/55 Maynard chambering reamer and a new 35 caliber barrel blank and I'm going to make up a new barrel I can shoot. Judge Robert Holt wrote an article some years ago on his. I don't recall what publication it was in but I think the Black Powder Cartridge News. He shot his. My new barrel has a 12" twist so I can shoot heavier bullets than the 170 grain original.

	Maynardg that was it thanks. Back in the mid nineties I built a 1884 Farrow for my friend John Windel in 35-55 Maynard based on the 30-40 case, and a cerrosage cast that a fellow sent us from Kansas that was from His original rifle. He shot it in BPCS for several years. He had it approved by the NRA . Later when Dan Theodore was working with it they denied it being legitimate. Kind of left a bad taste in my mouth with the NRA sillywet committee.

	Bob Holter's article was in Black Powder Cartridge News, Spring 2012, Issue 77, Page 26 - I have to go back and look at it again myself - I didn't realize it was so long ago. Funny - they allow the modern .40-65 but not the .35-55 - much like not allowing Borchardts and Martini's because they didn't have hammers. Easy to climb up on my soap box and go on a rant so I'll just stop here.

	Just thought that I would revive this thread since several people are now active with 35-40 Maynard chambered rifles for Silhouette. Makes me want to finish up my 35-55M. Seems like a bad deal when the NRA Sil Committe approved of the 35-55M and then they didn't when Dan T. started on it. Especially when Deadeye Bly came up with an Original Maynard in this chambering. beltfed/arnie

	I just met John Bly and talk to him about the cartridge and the rifle that he owns. I am the one that got the NRA to approve it in the beginning and then they denied it when Dan Theodore tried to use it. I send him the letter on their letter head and they said it did not matter they were not going to approve it. My friend John Wendell actually shot the Farrow that I built for him and chambered for the 35-55. He did not do too well as we figured out later the twist was too slow it shot good out to 200 but was tipping then and got worse after that. I think we were using a 14 “ twist and a 340 or 350 grain bullet.

	Just speculation... Perhaps due to Dan T's success's, extensive experimentation and detailed documentation they viewed him a wildcatter. Obviously his work met the spirit and intent of the period correct BPCR guidelines. Even though he had done extensive research on the Maynard rifles and their numerous chambering's, they chose to block him. I think they may have been resistant to accepting his proposals due to the fact that Maynard was a prolific rifle maker (starting in 1858) as such documentation was difficult. 	The 35/40 that is allowed is modified from the original cartridge. The original is a .400" diameter straight cartridge. The modern one is made from 38/55 just tapered down for the 35 caliber bullet. The base runs about .418" diameter. It seems odd that a modified cartridge would be allowed but an all original one would be denied. I personally know of 3 35/55 Maynards one original cartridge.
