All I have on the action in 44 1/2 on the front up against the forend.the barrel has a serial number though.

Is this normal? Action appears to be original  and not refinish that I can tell.

I have a three digit 044 1/2 and the serial number is on the bottom tang, aft of the trigger.

Perhaps your rifle started out life as a single trigger, and someone ordered a double set trigger assembly from Stevens, and installed them without returning the rifle to the factory for fitting. Hence no serial number. But who knows?
You say that 44 1/2 is stamped on the front of the frame, is there a 0 or EX stamped? Some people believe that the EX stamp means extras.

An "O" over another "O" on the left  and and 44 1/2 on the right. are the marks on the receiver face

Interesting. I have a model 44 1/2, and a 45 that have double set triggers, and a model 44 1/2, and a model 45 that have a single set trigger, that all have the EX stamp. What does this prove? Absolutely nothing, but I keep my guess that that someone added dst to your rifle later without factory fitting?

I'd say the EX stamp on all four rifles indicated something other than the standard Stevens rifle.  All have triggers that are not found on every rifle of that description.
