a recent article in bpc news has pics of a m-78 sharps long range rifle along w/ some period items related to the piece, there's a wooden plaque that says: assra long range black powder  and 2 affixed small brass plaques that say: 1000yd, 1st place bp  and 800yd, 1st place bp,  did we run long range matches around the turn of the 19th century??

If memory serves, the ASSRA was formed in the late 40"s, 1948?

I think the ASSRA was in some way associated with the BPCR long range matches in 2002 and 2004, the World Creedmoor Cup championships, held in Raton, New Mexico.
A very nice ASSRA silver cup was shown off for a team match maybe? Maybe someone here knows.

As I recall, Ernie Stallman was in charge of the Assra long range matches in the early 2000’s.  Ledball

If I remember correctly in the early 2000s the NRA abandoned the black powder long range program and the ASSRA offered help They drew up the rules that we folded into our rulebook and we helped on the insurance front.

Their association with long range black powder goes back a few years earlier.  I attended the national matches held at Camp Perry 1995, 96, 97 than at Missoula, MT in 1998.
I think the last one was held in California in 1999.  I didn't attend that one as I just finished the World Championship at the USMC base Quantico, VA that September.
The NRA (US) had just started their National long range matches at Raton in 1998 and 99.

I think the last NRA BP long range championships were held in 2018, abandoned 2019. I hope that is correct.

In 2002, Ernie Stallman got involved to promote the international style (rules) event and the ASSRA helped in some way with that including a very expensive trophy cup. That first match was held in September 2002.

I guess that I should have mentioned that the ASSRA was formed in the 1940's, in the 20th century!!

I knew that I had a picture of the ASSRA Cup and just ran across it yesterday.  It was at the last World Cup match held in the U.S. in 2008.  Another take on why Ernie got involved in the ASSRA, was because of Sept. 11, 2001.  For a while, there was a moratorium on any foreigner bringing a rifle into the United States unless it was for a match that was sanctioned by an official organization

CW is correct 2018 was the last NRA national championship BPTR match.

However there is a larger match being held in Phoenix the last few years, and here's a link to read about what is being planned for 2022
