Stevens-Pope .22 rimfire Krag barrels
Jan 29th, 2021 at 1:42pm
Print Post
Just received a report on the SN of another S-P Krag barrel.  This one is 893.  The one in Smith's book is 832.  Those are the only two I know of.

Can we infer that there were another 60 barrels between the two?  Are these numbers a part of the regular run of Stevens-Pope barrels?  Or are they a separate series?

They are simply 3-digit serial numbers.

How many digits do most Stevens-Pope barrels have?

I've got a 4 digit, and I've seen one that was in the high 1800's range. Don't recall the exact number?

IIRC, the only one I've personally fired was also in the 1800 range.

Jack, the Ballard is less than 40 numbers from your Low Wall

So, from what has been presented so far, it is not inconceivable that the S-P 22RF barrels made for Krags are in a separate numerical sequence?

I think you're quite correct Chauncey! I read somewhere that for some jobs where Pope made up batches of a certain repetitive barrel that he numbered outside his normal system.
I've just wondered where he started at? I doubt he built 800 something .22 Krag barrels.

I know of 900 and 903 one is for a carbine and the other for a Rifle. I believe that most  are  in one group and part of the normal Pope-Stevens serial sequence done early when Pope went to work at Stevens. Others could have been made later as needed. Warren Greatbatch is working on the Stevens-Pope book and should have it finished sometime.

Thanks Laurie!
So does this mean they were in a serial number range, but within the Stevens-Pope range of serial numbers?
