	I have 2 Stevens 44's I have recently acquired. Both are marked 44 and 0 on the face of the action. Both have the lower tang bent to form a pistol grip. The tangs do not look like they were once straight then bent. Serial #'s are 30432 and 13962. Both have 6 o'clock extractors. Did Stevens make pistol grip actions stamped 44 in this serial # range ?

	The Model 47, Schuetzen and ladies modesl had pistol grips, possibly among others. Wayne

	They weren't stamped 44 on the action face.

	Possible special order rifles? Looking at the reprint Stevens catalogs that I have, you could special order many things and Stevens would accommodate you, called “extras” to be added to the price of the rifle. $5.00 to $7.00 dollars for a plain pistol grip stock, depending on the year of the catalog. It seems in the earlier Stevens catalogs, many extras were available to add on to your rifle, as time went on the later catalogs, such as the 1914 catalog, they had less extras listed, and it seems like Stevens was less likely to accept special orders. Isn’t it fun trying to figure things out after 120 years or so without factory records.

	I actually enjoy it. When you reach a dead end you speculate. No provenance does not mean no history. I have an original Rolling Block Target rifle. It turned up in Montana and in very good shape. Did it belong to some well heeled rancher, some Remittance man ? Did it ever drop a Buffalo ? A boy's entitled to his dreams ain't he ?
