Engraved Stevens action

A friend just acquired this Stevens action and asked if the engraving was likely to be factory. This sort of thing is uncommon here in Oz so I have no idea. Grateful for any views/thoughts. Thanks.

looks to be a 44 1/2 or 044 1/2 how wide is the receiver.  I have the most of the screws on hand.

If the through hole for the lever pin isn't threaded and the pin is held in place by a small retaining screw, it's definitely a 44-1/2 or 044-1/2.  As for the very attractive and well done engraving, it's not a standard Stevens pattern and has the appearance of depth that is most typically considered "Germanic".  In any case, I very much doubt it's recent and, personally, I'd be tickled to build a rifle on that action.

Are there any markings on the front face of the action?  If so, what are they?

Agree with Ken its a 441/2 or an O and a very nice looking action and there should be something stamped on the face if not being trued at some point in time.

Thanks for those comments. I got the owner to have a look at the face of the action and there are two circles aligned vertically - looks like an "8" with a space between the circles. No other markings. Serial number is 11845. He's going to measure the width of the action to determine if it is a 0441/2. Thanks.

IIRC, nobody knows what those circles mean.  At least one circle (O or 0) is found on almost every 44.  Stevens offered several models on the same action.  The number designating the model is commonly stamped.

The second O might mean 044 1/2.  The measurement will tell us.

OK, that measurement of the action width has just come in and it is approx. 1.110" which makes it a 44 1/2 action. Here are some additional photos. Thanks.

That is really neat.  Is there a breech block in it or is it just the frame, lever and tang?

Joe, yes quite a bit of work has gone into that relief engraving and it will improve when it gets cleaned up. Unfortunately it's just the action frame with no internals. Stevens parts are very hard to get hold of here in Oz and ordering replacements from the USA is a real process ranging from v hard to almost impossible given increasing restrictions this end Undecided. So it will probably remain as an interesting example of engraved art.  From the position of that screw hole just below the front of where the breech block would sit when locked, I'd say it was originally in .22 LR with the "kicker" ejector.

That's a real shame. A beautiful unique action just sitting there with nothing to do for lack of a few parts.

The most forward and highest screw on the side is for an ejector on the later rimfire actions.

The hole on the front of the action is for a spring and plunger that rides on the breech block to help keep it from binding while traveling up and down.
