Is anybody aware of any instructional articles / videos on positioning for bench shooting?

Any and all feedback appreciated.

There is BR shooting and there is BR shooting. For what type of rifles (pistols?) are you asking?
BPCR?
Cast Bullet Assoc. ?
Schuetzen rifles?
Etc

There are indeed two Americas. Simply put, it is not the haves and have nots. The two Americans are in reality divided into those who do and those who don't.

The single best article i have ever read on plane based cast bullet benchers shooting Was an article by Buck Emmert. The Title was The Name Of The Game Is The Same. It has been reprinted in the Journal a few times over the years it also is in the Hogdon Reloading manual No. 25

As 40 Rod as recommend. The other option is to find a top Benchrest competitor in the sport that you are seeking to exel in and ask him to mentor you along that journey. And that is the approach I took and once I exceld I also did the same for others that I would then have to compete with.

Positioning? Sitting position for me.  The most comfortable position.

Rifle? Shooter? Equipment? Flags?

Best way to find out is to do it. At a match.

I guess you can say BPCR , I am shooting a handful of different rifles , all 45-70 using 405g, 500g, 525g and 535g projectiles over blackpowder or Triple Seven.

Body position when seated, rifle position and grip - equipment i.e. rear bag?

BPCR? (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links); As you can see, BPCR Silhouette and Creedmoor (long range) are not shot from a bench.

Having shot the below 405 Winchester in competitive Schuetzen 200yard Benchrest competition for a year it was a very tasking feat to be able to stay focused and more importantly to maintain the level of concentration it takes to be competitive due to the amount of recoil involved. If possible I would start out with something with quite abit less recoil until you can first master the amount of focus and concentration it takes to aquire both those mandatory skills to become extremely competitive shooting off a bench.

These are five URLs with variations. Some are slanted more for hunting, but techniques are similar.

Review these and work to develop  the technique that best suits you and your equipment.

To lessen the effect of recoil, I shoot my BSA Martini .22 LR for initial practice on technique when testing loads or scopes.

If you can get access to a file of the old Precision Shooting magazines, there are a lot of benchrest techniques set out by the top shooters of the 90s and early 2000s.  The editor was kind of a genius, in that he could cajole articles out of very skilled people who otherwise wouldn’t write down much more than a shopping list, machining layouts, or loading notes.

I can’t give you specific issues, since for a long time the publication didn’t even have a a table of contents.  But there’s a lot of good stuff in there, if you’re willing to search.

Harvey Donaldson also had some articles on rest shooting, in the American Rifleman and in his regular column in the Handloader magazine.  These, I believe, were reprinted in the book Yours Truly, Harvey Donaldson.

I'd suggest attending an ASSRA match/event and watch what folks are doing.
Here is a list of our affiliated clubs; (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

Thanks, when I said BPCR I simply meant black powder cartridge rifles which is how I define the guns I shoot. I know the competitions you mention are usually shot seated with shooting sticks, I'm not that good yet. I need to learn more about the fundamentals which is easier for me using a bench.
