Spotted 1874 Shiloh Sharps 38-55

In my lgs today I spotted two 1874 Shiloh Sharps (at least I think the second one was - the tag was turned). The one I could see had a really nice look with pretty wood and a full octagon barrel, double sets, pistol grip and a schnabble foreend, tang sight and was in 38-55. From 5 feet it looked brand new. I know some guys are waiting a long time for one. Price was $2000. I don't know what they go for.

From your meager description, no condition report, and no picture, I'd guess $2000 is roughly10%-15% less than retail from Shiloh.

Given the description and condition from five feet, appears new, a rifle as descibed from Shiloh would be pushing $3000, would be my guess, and probably a fairly long wait. Probably returning for a close examination and checking with Shiloh would be prudent.

Of course Shiloh has to tack Federal excise onto their listed price don't they? I'm sure the shop would send pics if asked. Let me just put it this way, I've never been a big fan of the 74 Sharps action, but this was one exceptionally nice looking rifle that I would have been proud to show up with at the range. This shop has just acquired a huge collection of collector quality single shots (not the Ballard/Winchester kind) and it wouldn't surprise me if this was one from the collection. I'm not saying it was a collector Sharps but the guy that amassed this collection had an amazing eye for and ability to find unbelievable specimens. One of these days I'll have to get one of those picture taking telephone things. I only get in town to the shop every 5 or 6 weeks so it probably won't be there next time I do. Obviously I wasn't in the market for one or I would have asked to have it down for close inspection.

Real glad what you are describing is about a days drive for me... on second thought, PM me the address of the shop - I may need another Shiloh fix... Damn! I wouldn't want these things to fall into the wrong hands!

Yep. That's about 1/3 off what you pay for new Shiloh. Could be more if there is fancier wood, checkering, etc. Too bad its a 3-day drive for me. Good luck to whomever gets their first.

Most Shiloh buyers opt for the larger .40 and .45 caliber chamberings, so any in .38-55 are very unusual. Not a caliber in a Sharps that will attract those wishing to take on long range match shooting, but I personally would love to own one in .38-55 over bigger calibers.....if I wanted a Sharps '74. Like you, I'm not a fan of the big side hammer Sharps, and never had any desire to keep one. I've had a few just because they were bargains, but I sold them quickly.

So give us the name of the gunshop and where it is.  Easy enough to find a phone number.
