I shot a bunch of 30/40 cast in two Krags years ago Rifle and a carbine. Won some CBA matches with the carbine . Bullet was SAECOs 901 196gr Truncated Cone gas check. SAECO new catalog says “duplicates original RG4” lot of old data from CBA recommends the RG 4

Can’t recall the charge but it was 4759 and about 1600 FPS. In the long Krag throat it shot better than SAECOs #311 near duplicate 170 G shot in my O3 Springfields

Recently had one of my CPA rifles up at Gail’s shop for re stocking. Asked her to fit a 30/40 barrel to it same time. So far no cast but it shoots 168 G Match Kings great. Sniper crowd at our club shoots steel at distances to 600 yards. CPA 30/40 with a Unertl 12x target always surprises them ringing steel 300 400 500 & 600. 30/40 has about the same case volume as 308 & easily duplicates performance in a strong rifle .

i have a #3 ruger (1976) in 30-40 Krag which loves the 168 gr Sierras. it will shoot the 311284 cast hard but not as good.
i have a lightweight barrel i took off of a hiwall and one of these days i might find an action for it. the twist is 1-10 and the bore is shiny. i shoot my original Krags with the bullets designed for the thuty thuty, flat nose little pills which are a lot of fun. The Krag is a delight to shoot and very forgiving. A true classic!

George, you mentioned thinking about having a lighter highwall in 30-40. My one-piece stocked 30-40 highwall by Farr with 22 inch sporter weight barrel in 30-40 weighs exactly 6 pounds and has a Lyman 102 tang sight. With 20 grains of 4198 under the Lyman 311284 bullet it has grouped .8 inch at 100. Barrel measures 1.06 inches diameter for the first 1.7 inches from the receiver and in the next 2 inches smoothly tapers to .775 and then straight tapers to .585 at the muzzle. It is a 10 twist.

Here's the acquisition story behind this Ballard Rifle Co. 1885. This all took place back in January, so I'm a little late with the post, sorry. So, I had a 44 rf rolling block with a single set trigger, beech front sight and the rough and ready rear sight. I wanted to reline it and convert to 40-50 sharps straight. However, reason prevailed, and I swapped it straight across for the high wall. I think I got a good deal. The 1885 has a #3 30" barrel made by Douglas, single set trigger, shotgun butt and scope blocks with an MVA tang sight base. Plans are for a MVA scope and mounts. Here's a picture, hope you all enjoy.

Is the sight base on backwards?
My hiwalls have the staff on  the top of the tang.

I had thought that as well, but the MVA site shows it that way. Also, the tang base countersinks are sized for the appropriate screw head, ie: the tang screw head will only fit in the base installed as shown and the top tang screw is sized for the smaller countersink in the sight base.

Makes me want to take out my 8.5 twist Obermeyer SS barrelled 30-USA Ruger No 1 to play again. I have an old 308281 mold stop ring bullet to shoot in it. along with a NOE 247 gr.
Have shot with 70 gr Compressed BP in a Ruger No 3 Krag. with the 308284 bullet. Seems to me something like 1700fps plus.

PS, it is noted that C Sharps lists the 30-40 chambering in
their catalog for their 1885 and Sharps rifles

I have one of those Uberti/"Cimarron" High Wall imitations.  Never done any of the basic things with it:  measure the twist or slug the bore, but it seems to shoot OK at gongs between 400 and 1060 yards.  Was a lot more fun to shoot when I put the buttstock from a 3rd Model Winder on it.  I'll have to get it out & report back.  Much less $ than going for a real American High Wall.  If you are on a limited budget, consider one.

I'm a sucker for anything chambered in 30-40. I currently have two original Krag Jorgensen rifles (though with an the sight changes, who knows how origibal), a Krage Joergensen sporter, a Winchester 1895 (Miroku made, branded Browning), a Ruger No 3, and an H&R Handi Rifle chambered in 35 Krag.

So,show me a fantastic rifle like that Ballard and I'm all "where do I get obe?!"

great find. Enjoy.

Kilt my first deer with a 30-40 Krag. I thought 30 was the caliber and 40 was 40 grains of black powder. Still have the rifle. Throat is a little eroded but will still take deer. I have other Krags that I've used in CBA military matches. Saeco 301, trancated cone tapered gas check bullet shoots nine extremely tight but always seem to get a flyer. 311-284, bigger groups but no flyers.
No special love for the 30-40 over anything else. Well it has a rim so that makes it better than a lot of others.

30-40's are my favorite CB caliber.  My latest is a Shiloh Montana Rough Rider Sporter.  It really likes the original Lyman 311284.

A little history about the 30-40 Karg.  Have copies of the NJ Adjacent General reports when the Krags were first tested in 1894 at Sea Girt range.  The troops didn’t like them … wanted their 45-70s
