Ruger No.1 45-70

Well, the last thing a person should do when he's losing his eyesight is to buy another rifle. It just doesn't make any sense. A member on this forum gave me the heads up on this Ruger No.1 in 45-70 with a 26" barrel. ( thanks Lance ) I put in a bid and won it. Had one with a 22" barrel but was never head over heels with it. Never cared for the carbine length barrel. Even after winning it, I questioned my sanity. I guess there is no cure for Singleshotitis. And I hope they never come up with one. But this one will stay in the family as my son, who is not really a big gun guy, does like this one. and will inherit it. I just don't feel like giving up on this great hobby of our's. Not quite yet. Until I start walking into telephone poles, I'll keep burning powder. Dale.

Nice rifle! I like the 26" barrel much better than the short carbine barrel.
Congratulations!

I've been hunting one of them since Lipsey's sold out. Glad you found yours, it's a grand looking rifle!

GunFunPow, I've heard that only 250 were made like this with the Circassion wood and 26" barrel so I was extremely lucky. Keep on looking though as you never know when one will come up again. Dale.

JMH, My hot rod days are over. But 40 years ago, I used to shoot old Elmer's load of 53 grs. of 3031 behind a 400 gr. Speer. in my 22" No.1. Actually enjoyed it. Not now. Will probably use Trapdoor loads and just enjoy it. Dale.

In a No1 you can push a 45-70 to scary levels. I wouldn't hesitate using it on anything North America has to offer, and most of what Africa has to offer. Not too sure my shoulder is up to it now though. I used to hunt with a light weight 45-70 Hepburn with it's steel butt plate and hefty loads, but was in my 20s, 30s, and 40's. Trapdoor loads or a 38-55 is more my speed now, thank you.

I agree with what you are saying. A few years back in "Rifle" magazine, Brian Pearce stopped a Cape Buffalo with a No.1 45-70. I'm sure his WH had a heavy back-up rifle. Dale.
