Suddenly this topic is no longer sorted by submission date -- the other topics seem OK.   Is this something I can deal with from here?

  It's all sorted by the last post.  If you go back several years and reply to an inactive thread it will come back to the top. At the right side of the header bar it says "Last Post" click on that and see what happens.
