Original powder question

Am working on a Paper patched load for a 40-70 Remington.  A bottle neck  cartridge similar to 40-70 Sharps BN.   Cartridges of the World lists a a Factory load, but what grade of black powder would be a factory load.   My guess is FFg,  since that is the only one I don't have.

It is for an original #1 sporter and I plan to only use fixed ammo.

I suspect it varied among ammunition companies. I've read of FG being used, but couldn't say if that was universal. I can say that Goex FFG works well in my .40-70 bn Sharps when I do my part.

As an alternative to Fg or FFg, I would definitely
try Swiss 1.5 if you have it.
I would seat the bullet about 0.125 to 0.150 in the case. load :  whatever it takes starting with zero compression.

Work up from there. Noting it is "rumored" that you don't want much if any compression in a BN case.....
