	Actually, there are 2 challenges. The second one is how to do it, and I shall get round to that in a couple of days. The first challenge, dear reader, is for you! What caliber is it? There are 3 clues: 1) the graph paper has 5mm squares, 2) the case on the left was formed from a "correct" original. However, it was my first try, and 3) the case on the right was formed from a much cheaper alternative -- and the result is better! Have fun! Patrick

	Sorry about the pic size, I'm still working on it. I think I fixed the pic now. BTW 8mm Lebel is a good start, but look at the base! Use the scaling (5mm) on the paper.

Patrick You might want to take a bit of the mystery out of this and just use a pin gauge or a caliper to measure the I.D. This appears to be about 8mm but you can certainly let us know what it is.

	Well if Oneatatime and Marlinguy got together, they'd have it. It's actually 8x47R (Stahl). It is the immediate forerunnerof the popular 8.15x47R, and uses the same bullet. But it is a blackpowder cartridge and uses the Mauser "A" base that was introduced with the Gewehr M71 and adapted for a wide range of target rifle chamberings that are practically extinct today. The case on the left is one reformed from an M71 case. These cases are expensive, so for further experiments I switched to 45-70 cases - which are plentiful and economic. And as you can see, the 45-70 shapes up beautifully. The only disadvantage is that, because the body is a touch undersized, the formed case has a slight bulge on one side - just about detectable in the foto - and so the case should always be inserted with the same orientation to obtain maximum accuracy. That is no problem with a single-shot block action, where you can see the base as you push in the cartridge. In my next contribution on this theme - probably next week - I will show how I reformed the case, and the on-target results.

	Patrick, now you have to show us the rifle! If for the first fire forming shot you put a narrow wrap of tape just ahead of the rim, the bulge will center the case in line with the bore and you won't have to worry about the orientation.
